I just loved THE DEEP when it came out in the late 70's.Got the soundtrck on an album(no cd as of yet that I know of),origial movie poster and vhs tape.Just recently purchased the DVD and was wondering if anyone knows if they will be putting out a version that had the tv extras in it like when it came on NBC in the 80's (I believe). When Treece found Coffin washed up on shore and a few others.Saw it on TBS a while back and they had Jackies ta ta's in her undershirt fuzzed out.Just wondering if anyone knew of anything coming out.Thanks.

hi

Love the movie too. I have the dvd and noticed for instance that it cuts the very short moment
Spoiler:
when Shaw hugs/holds Tessier after covering him with his jacket: very powerful moment ( i'm no gay and this was not meant like that all: he felt like a father to him or a brother ).

any more shots of Bisset in the wet t-shirt would be most welcomed!!!!

Last time I talked with Columbia exec. Michael Stradford he claimed that the DVD didn't sell as well as they thought. So a special edition would not be forthcoming for awhile. He did however mention that they are trying to come up with the lost footage. Does anyone know if the NBC extended version (53 minutes, I think) is available anywhere? Surely someone must have recorded it back then...

I would love to ask Mr. Stradford: why then release a pan 'n scan-only version which would appeal to even less people...

Exactly.

Let's do a DVD of a film with a lot of underwater scenes and let's do it in foolscreen.

Actually, that should be a perfect example of how you know you shouldn't be in the DVD business.

In Final Cut, his book about Heaven's Gate and the near-destruction of United Artists, Steven Bach describes a meeting where then-chairman Andy Albeck and others discussed buying Peter Benchly's third novel, The Beast:

"Andy, this guy's last two books were huge best sellers. The movie of the first one became one of the top-grossing films of all time. The movie of the second one, [The Deep - jd] which was only routine, did forty million dollars..."

"Domestic or worldwide?"

"Domestic, I think."

Albeck shot sharply: "That was because of big boobies in wet T-shirts. Does this book have boobies?"

When the Indiana Jones boxset came out a couple of years back Laurent Bouzerau was interviewed by Empire magazine who asked him what other films he would be interested in overseeing special editions of... one of them (in fact it might have been the only one he mentioned) was The Deep - apparently it's one of his favourite films. So you never know.

There's certainly ample material for a special edition. As for deleted scenes there's the known extra footage for the TV version (a prologue with the sinking of the Goliath that includes a role for Peter Benchley, Treece finding Adam Coffin washed up on the shore - both taken from the novel) plus allegedly footage showing 'more' of Jacqueline Bisset that was going to be included on the Pioneer laserdisc release but was vetoed by Ms Bisset herself.

With the sad exception of Robert Shaw and Bob Tessier all the major players in front and behind the camera are available for commentaries and interviews and the film received a wealth of post-Jaws coverage at the time so there are bound to be vintage featurettes in existence (the publicity stills are in to triple figures). Oh and if there's some hesitation about including an isolated score from maestro John Barry let me reassure you: include it

Are you listening Columbia? Special edition of The Deep? Where do I preorder?!!

Perhaps that new Paul Walker/Jessica Alba vehicle 'Into the Blue' which looks like a direct remake of the Deep will garner some interest. Or not.

I just watched this the other day and had no idea there was so much extra footage. I have the "Widescreen" flipper dvd and while it has a major lack of extras it's one of my favorite discs, tho' I would gladly double-dip for even an extended version sans extras.

i have a LOT of affection for this movie and i would also love to have a spanky new SE.
in fact, this title, even more so than something like Spider-man 2, is what i crave on an HD medium.

but i agree that Sony is no longer a reliable studio for quality product. a good SE would most likely be compromised somewhere down the line.
then we would be left to wonder when the superbit deluxe version would be coming out

Oops. They probably were. I was relying on my memory for the titles of Benchley's post-Jaws and generally forgetable novels. Bach's quote only refers to "[this writer's] second novel" without naming either the writer or the book. The particulars are clear from the context, but unstated. I thought The Beast was Benchley's second book, but if you say it was The Island, I stand corrected.

Final Cut is a terrific book, and it is surprising how little has changed in the movie biz in the past 20 years.

I believe, as you stated, the folks at UA were considering Benchley's third book, which IIRC was The Island, and they were comparing it to his successful 1st and 2nd books - Jaws and The Deep.

I read a couple of weeks ago that the extended LD project was cancelled after a lawsuite or threat of one by Bisset because of the extra footage of her. I would die to see an extra 50 minutes or so of this film, as it is one of my favorites. Did anyone see the TV broadcast that contained the footage back in the 80's?

What is the deal with Jacqueline Bisset, anyway? She signed the contract, put on the tee shirt and got wet. She could have said, "Thanks but no thanks. I want a wet suit, or at least a bikini top so my goodies don't show."

Just like Sharon Stone whining about all the nudity in Basic Instinct she claims she didn't know was being filmed. A cameraman is pointing a camera at you, an attractive naked or almost naked female and you think you are not being filmed. This is a MENSA member?

I'd sure like it if there were some naked footage of Nick Nolte. I wonder how many of the other female HTF members would like to see that? Nick sure was fine!

"The contract" may have specified that the wet T-shirt was OK, but actual nudity was out. That would have given her a perfect right to veto any shots where the T-shirt popped loose, not only from the theatrical release, but from home video versions, too. It that is the case there's nothing odd or inconsistent in her actions. (Although I agree Sharon Stone is way out of line.)

Ah The Deep I like this movie (and not just for the wet T-Shirt) as a fair amount of it was actually shot on Bermuda which is a favorite vacation spot of mine. With all the white roofs, mopeds and chirping tree frogs it is very Bermuda-ey and the scenes not shot there stick out like sore thumbs.

I've even stayed a couple of times at one of the locations used in the movie (seen briefly at the top of the beach elevator thingy (11:06) the elevator is no longer there, but the view is just as good ).

Found the widescreen/pan&scan version pressing from 1999, and it looked pretty darn good on my 92 in screen. If you can still find a copy, I highly recommend picking it up as the recent pan&scan-only release is an abomination, and there does not seem to be any desire by Sony to revisit this title anytime soon.

Re: The deep

Real shame this never did materialize. At this point , it's probably my #1 Sony title wanted on Blu-ray ( Lawrence of Arabia isn't coming for a couple of years and The Professionals just was announced). An extended cut SE w/ isolated score and other extras would still be a great way to release it..

Re: The deep

If you can try to find the Widescreen/Pan Scan Edition you should buy it. They are out there, I found one at a used DVD/ cd shop they thought it was worthless at about 6.99 for it used ... the back said WS and FULL FRAME or whatever and the DVD was the same. So it was a winner.

I would like a special edition with the deleted scenes also. It isn't a great movie by any means but it is escapism and it works and I love it.

Re: The deep

I do have the original wide/full pressing of this. Think I paid $17.99 at Media Play for it IIRC. It holds up pretty, even on a very large screen, but scope ratio films especially are what I want to upgrade to HD versions sooner rather than later. I'll even take it w/out extras just to get it in HD. And yes- not high art, just great popcorn entertainment to me, that doesn't feel like its killing my brain cells as I watch it.

Well, well, well... (I know it's referencing the blu-ray but thought it more appropriate here)

http://www.dvdtimes.co.uk/content/id...d-in-july.html

Extras consist of a making of and "selected scenes" from the tv version. So pretty lacklustre but better than nothing. Unless the making of is something a bit special. Which is doubtful.

Unfortunately there's no mention of an SD release. I hope that's just an oversight..!

That's what I'm wanting as well. I've been waiting and hoping for a re-release (std) in anamorphic format for this movie.

Re: The deep

I just about did cartwheels when I heard this confirmed- although I still feel like I might jinx it by celebrating too much. I for one am very happy to see a Bd version released first. Bd player prices will be falling dramatically by the end of the year so there should be little reason for people to continue to hold out if the format has exclusive content they want.
I'm surprised and delighted to see even a cursory attempt at making this an SE. I'm pretty sure I remember seeing a 'making of' TV special way back when. And I'm guessing the reason the extra footage is limited to 'selected scenes may be because the TV edit may only exist on tape at this point. Not all (or even any) ofthe deleted scenes might be from good elements.
