Were the master kinescopes from WAY OUT done in 16mm or 35mm?

      That's a good question. I don't really know but having looked at them I would say they aren't good enough quality to be 35mm. Besides, I don't know if there is such a thing as a 35mm kine. It would be nice if the 2-inch tapes did still exist somewhere. It's been a few years since I viewed these shows but I remember one of the kines being in pretty bad shape. And it was on one of the better episodes as I recall.

Yes there is - "Space Patrol" and "Time Out for Beany" were both kined in 35mm :)

35 mm was the NY network format of choice.  If the WAY OUT episodes weren't videotaped, they were certainly Kined in 35mm.

None of the episodes I've ever seen, and I've seen all 14, look like anything but 16mm kines. And not that great either.

They recently had a screening of an episode of Way Out at a tribute to Dick Smith that was covered by Aint it Cool.  I'm guessing if there is a decent print out there they would have dug it up for that, but I wasn't there and have no idea how the quality looked.

Somehow I confidently feel that CBS Television has all the original WAT OUT! video transfers safely stored away in their cavernous film vaults in optimum condition.

 

It just remains for some television archivist to bring them out back into the public view once again.

 

Surely a show as distinctively unique and quality driven as WAY OUT! was will not disappear into a permanent limbo of inaccessibility.

I loved "Way Out." My favorite show at that time was "Twilight Zone," but "Way Out" grabbed me, too. The one episode I remember was about a portrait photographer who had a special touch-up fluid. He'd take a photo of a person with a facial scar; after developing the picture, he'd use the fluid to erase the person's scar from the picture -- and like magic, the person's scar would disappear in real life. Do you remember that episode and what the amazingly grotesque visual was at the end?

16mm prints were reductions from 35mm that were usually made as either back-ups or for smaller markets.

The name of that most horrific episode was "Soft Focus" with Barry Morse.

     Considering the fact that the show hasn't been seen anywhere outside of a museum in 48 years, I would say it already has.

Well, 5 episodes have been seen. I have watchable copies. They are:

William & Mary
I heard you calling me
The Croaker
Dissolve to Black
Death Wish

I'd like to think the other episodes are stored somewhere (besides Paley Media). If they are truly the only ones who have them, it might be another 48 yrs. I have heard CBS has Soft Focus, False Face & Side Show. If true, they may have the rest too. I bet if there was enough interest (I E more people knew of this great show), it would've been at least considered for DVD. I would think most fans of shows like The Twilight Zone, The Outer Limits, One Step Beyond, Thriller and perhaps Alfred Hitchcock Presents/Hour would find Way Out quite interesting.
