One of my neighbors is all AR, 6.1 using Hi Res line and the Big Hi Res sub. Brett would know the model # of the sub.... Sunfire powered.

Sounds nice even being drive with his Pioneer Elite...Not a big Pioneer fan... A little to forward for me though and the Pioneer most likely dose not help in this area.

I do think there are "many" more lurking here that run AR and just don't post about them.

Geoff,

If he has the HiRes sub the Bad Boy is the ARS-500 which is
what I got my plate amp from.. 500 watts of Bob Carver
Tracking Down Converter 20Amp maximum draw... The ARS 500
is a 15" Slot Loaded Vented Enclosure tuned to 19Hz if
memory serves me.. Then there is the ARS 300 which is a
300 Watt Carver Sunfire TDC mated to a 12" Sub again in a
Slot Loaded Enclosure.

I have yet to ever read one bad word about the ARS 500 or
ARS 300 subs.. Infact there are numerous reviews where
people sold thier Velodynes and other subs when they got
these beasts in thier possesion. Sadly you can't get your
hands on one now but for a short time (maybe AR was trying
to solve liquidity issues) you could get an ARS 500 for as
low as $500.00 (For a sub that normaly retailed closer to
$1500.00)

I just hope Gemini either funnels apropriate money
through
Acoustic Research or they resell them to someone who will
Yank any and all contracts they have with mass market crap
stores like BestBlunder and Circus City. I want to see AR
as it was in the 50's through the 90's... Kloss did a fantastic
job when he was in charge of the company but even when he
moved on to oher ventures (KLH) Teledyne took over AR and
under Teledyne's leadership made some of the best speakers
that AR ever offered (including the original AR-9 )

I know which one he has, just wanted to see you drool a little....

He's got the Big Boy and it's pretty darn big. He's not hurting for bass and loves demoing it for people.

We can here/feel him on the nights he goes after it at our house over 100ft away,,, and he is in his basement.

Have to admit it is a impressive sounding sub, but I do not care for it's styling. Thats just IMO.....

He thinks it's beautiful and I'd swear he prefers it to his wife some times!!!!

I believe Gemini is merely buying Recoton's audio/video accessories business. The future of AR is still up in the air. Like I said in another AR thread, I am hoping someone like Boston Acoustics will come along for the rescue.

I recently parted with my old ARs, i had a set of M5s (think thats what the number was, from around 1990 or so--goofy looking speakers with the woofer on the top at an angle upward, said to be 'holographic' or something in the manual). Great sounding speakers, passed on to my mother in law. I also have a pair of AR Powered Partners from ca 1989 if that counts.

I used to have 4 AR speakers I used as front and rear surrounds. I don't remember the model but they were triangle shaped. When I sold my house one of the stipulations for the buyer was that the speakers stay with house.

I still have a real old pair of AR's I got them in 1980. They solid walnut about three and a half feet tall and about two feet deep with 20inch wolfers, single midrange and tweeter and weight about 100lbs each. They now are in my garage but they still sound damn good for old tanks.

All of my 7.1 HT set up contains AR speakers.
Mains-L&R-----Stature--- S50's
Center--------Stature--- SC2
Side Surround-Stature--- S20's
Rear Surround-Stature--- S20's
Front 15" Sub----------- ARS115
Using all of the Master Series interconnects and speaker wire.
I purchased all of these speakers back in Dec of 2001 and I have been very pleased with this series of AR speakers being driven by my Sony 5ES receiver.
Yes I'm a proud owner of AR.

I have the ar hc-5 silver speaker set. Bought them two weeks ago from hh greggs for 275 dollars for all six speakers. I knew ar was in trouble but thought for the price, who cares. By the way, they replaced a set of bose am 6's.

James,

You gave away a set of Holographic Imageing Series M5a's?

Are you CRAZEEEE?

Those are a good pair of sounding speakers all be it strange
looking beasts.. The Rock Partners are also nice speakers.

All of these 80's and 90's Teledyne's were very good sounding
and have good resell value!

Dale,

Congrats on your purchase... So... Do they sound better than
Bose? (I allready know the answer!)

Terrence,

Sorry I took so long...

Geoff,

Hey with loads of clean bass what's not to love? Sure it's
not the prettiest face but it's no more "ugly" than an SVS
cylinder either

It WOULD be the one day I'm not online that an AR party is
thrown -sigh-.

Better late than never I guess. As most already know I'am
a disturbingly ecstatic owner of a pair of AR1 power towers
. They are the L/R front channels in my 5.1 setup......and
the wing beneath my wings.

P.S: Take all the love and enthusiasm Rocket and SVS owners
have, and the combined sum would barely be equal to that of
a gnats eye in comparison to how I feel about the AR1's.

Hey Terence,
It's good to know that I'm not the only one out there enjoying my HT set up using these AR speakers as they are a very nice set of speakers.
Slim and sleek.
Heavy with adjustable spikes etc,etc.
Black cabinet which blends in well with any decor.
And most of all they sound damm good!!!!!

Hello Brett. Yes they do sound better than the bose. When watching movies is where I see a great improvement. I can see why people bash Bose. I have been trying to convince myself for over a year that the were good. Also my wife liked them because they were small, but now that I got the ar's she is content. Me to for now?

I have some AR M4's, the holographic type, in our living room. To be honest, I haven't listened to them much for years. They're more for my wife and kids to listen to their music, while I listen to mine in the bedroom.

I did use them quite a bit in the past though and liked them a lot. On some pieces, like Holst's The Planets and certain percussive and accoustice pieces, they were/are magic.

Every now and then, I wander out of my lair and say, "Hey, those speakers still sound pretty darn good."

I wanted to add that my first home theater had all AR speakers, 2 M4's, and 3 M3's, along with my trusty Onkyo Pro-7 Receiver and a sub made by Yamaha that got good reviews then, but would be pretty inadequate next to the subs put out today. If I recall, this was about 1987-88.

I have a pair of the original AR9s, purchased new about 1981. They sit, unused, in my home, patiently awaiting replacement of the foam surrounds in the 12" woofers and 8" lower-midrange drivers. I haven't decided, though, if I will keep or sell them.

The sound quality of these ol' friends is awesome, but the only place I can utilize them in our new home is in the theater room, which is still filled with unpacked boxes (and the lonely ARs). Unfortunately, I wouldn't be able to make a perfect tonal match with a center channel and surrounds.

Presently, a set of Polk LSi-25s and their supporting cast are my leading candidates to replace the AR9s. LSi-25s, which we also use in our den system, share many sonic similarities with the AR9s.

Running a full set of ARs right now,

Front: S50's
Rear: 208V's
Center: C225PS
Sub: S112PS

and then have an extra pair of 208V's and one S50 that I might use for a Center or Rear Center one of these days...

This is great! All of these AR owners chiming in old & new speakers, man this excellent. Hey GabrielC & Curtis. How do you like your S50's? Do you use the spikes? Lastly are they bi-amp or bi-wired?

I'm using the spikes and mine are bi-wired. I found the bass tightened up when i finally installed the spikes a while back. When i bi-wired them only heard a slight improvement.

I'm actually involved in the sale of Recoton, and I can tell you that Gemini is not bidding on the Audio division, only the accessories.

There is a "major manufacturer" of consumer electronics bidding on the entire Recoton package that has GREAT plans for AR. They are a publicly traded company, and can be found in many major retail stores. It's not any of the names that have been mentioned here.

There are also 3 other MAJOR names who are interested in Recoton. Believe me, no matter who gets them, they WILL be back in a big way.

I was actually thinking of either purchasing the HC6 setup, or a setup consisting of S50's, S20's, SC2, and the P1010 Sub. Anybody recommend one over the other? THANKS
