Horror Fans: Is DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK (1973) on DVD?

Re: Horror Fans: Is DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK (1973) on DVD?

They just announced six but all Best Buy only titles.

There are rumors going around that more horror titles are going to be BB deals so perhaps Warner could make a set of TV horrors.

Re: Horror Fans: Is DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK (1973) on DVD?

Just announced: Guillermo del Toro will produce a remake of ABC's 1973 telefilm DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK for Miramax. Guillermo will adapt Nigel McKeand's teleplay alongside Matthew Robbins. Robbins worked on MIMIC with del Torro, and co-wrote and directed DRAGONSLAYER.
DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK will be directed by comic artist Troy Nixey.

Re: Horror Fans: Is DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK (1973) on DVD?

First of all, this is tremendous news! Can you imagine what
Guillermo del Toro can do with this remake?

Secondly, this explains the delay in Warner releasing this to DVD.
I would think that they are going to time the original 1973 telefilm
with the theatrical remake release.

My guess is, pending how long it takes to make this new film, we
may be waiting at least another year or two for the 1973 telefilm
release to DVD.

....of course, all this is pure speculation based on how the studios
usually market their releases.

Re: Horror Fans: Is DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK (1973) on DVD?

Ronald, I totally agree that this is most excellent news! I have very fond memories (nightmares!!!) of this film from when I was young and I have not seen it since I was a child in the 70's. I have avoided watching it on YouTube. I really look forward to del Torro's re-imagining and hope to one day revisit the original on DVD.

Re: Horror Fans: Is DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK (1973) on DVD?

Thats good to hear that he is attached to the remake, but if theyre going to time the original dvd with this thats terrible, only because the remake could be at least a year before it comes out, if not more.I hope this isnt the case, we have waited forever as it is.

Re: Horror Fans: Is DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK (1973) on DVD?

The sad thing is that even if this gets released, there are so many excellent horror tv-movies that will never get a release. The amazing thing is if anyone even puts out flawed copies of it, the studio will jump down their throat legally. Then they'll bury it forever. In effect, they are fighting not to release the movie on dvd. Sometimes I think copyrights are the worst thing ever invented.

According to imdb, the remake doesnt get released till 2011 !!!!!!!!!!!!! I cant believe Warner is going to make us wait till then, for a dvd of the original.

Re: Horror Fans: Is DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK (1973) on DVD?

I wonder what condition most TV movie elements are in? I doubt preserving them was ever given much thought, which may be what's holding up their release on DVD.

Re: Horror Fans: Is DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK (1973) on DVD?

Per last evening's chat:

Quote:
(RonEpstein) You announced in a prior chat that the 70s TV movie
"Don't Be Afraid of the Dark" would be considered for release shortly. We know a theatrical movie remake is forthcoming. Has that changed
your plans to release this TV movie in the near future?

(WHV) We're waiting for confirmation on the theatrical film before announcing our plans.

I've never seen this. But hell, Kim Darby? I'm a fan. But those amazon prices right now! It'll be good to buy one for less than it would cost to take her out to dinner at a fine restaurant.

But any project this director is tied to will be an event. some good names behind it. Dragonslayer is a fav of mine.

Its nice to know they still plan to release it, but 2011 when the remake comes is a long time to wait.

Well, you never know. They still don't have LET'S SCARE JESSICA TO DEATH: THE REMAKE out. But I've already watched my DVD of the original 4 times.

Re: Horror Fans: Is DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK (1973) on DVD?

Also, del torro has at least 3 or four projects in the works, before he could even start on the remake, so it will be a miracle if its even 2011!!!!I cant beleive Warner is going to wait forever just to do a tie in.

Cool.

No date yet but they are taking preorders.  Hopefully they'll have the good sense to get it out by Halloween.

I'll add it to my possible October purchases.

If it is up for pre-order than the release date (lol) will be the first Tuesday in August or August 4th.  Yes this is on my to buy list along with three other title now listed for pre-order.  I have to say that I thought of many titles when Ron whetted my appetite on speculation and this was not one.  Pleasant surprise.  Thanks.

Also maybe Warner's has some surprises up their hand for latter down the road and closer to October.
