I finally got around to watching the Lady in the Lake DVD today. To my great surprise, the opening credits give away the ending. It's not blatent at first, but if you pay attention to the way certain supporting actors are billed and follow the plot, the ending becomes quite obvious

I'm surprised MGM would allow this to slip through.

If Jayne Meadows had been billed under the name of the landlord as opposed to the name of the supposedly dead woman, it would have helped shield the ending.

Thanks Pete. Great news about the Warner boxes continuing!

Interesting that there are no quotes from Fox, particularly with regards to whether their noir series will continue beyond this year. I would presume that they were contacted but, in typical fashion, chose not to make any statement about their future plans.

Speaking of Fox noirs, weren't the latest three titles (Fourteen Hours, Shock, and Vickie) supposed to come out today? I hit both Best Buy and Circuit City on my lunch hour, and came up empty at both....

They definitely came out today, I got all 3 of them at J and R Music World in NYC during lunch. They were priced at $9.99 each. I plan on watching them this weekend.

Has there been an announcement regarding the next installment?

Nothing official yet, but it's widely assumed that THE BRASHER DOUBLOON will be one of them (given the fact that noir authority Eddie Muller has recorded a commentary track for it).

Regarding the three latest Fox noirs, I'll have to extend my search to Border's. They'll probably have 'em, but at full retail ($14.99 each).

I have finished watching The Hammer Film Noir Collection by VCI. Fantastic b-film noir movies! Only The Stolen Face was previously released on DVD in the UK. We should really be greatful to VCI for making these great movies available. I only have one minor complaint about the packaging. I have bought The Collectors set was very surprised at how poorely the DVDs were stored - all three are stacked on one spindle without any gaps between the DVDs. No individual slip cases, not even a digi-pack style place for each DVD. If I new about this before, I would buy the individual releases. Besides, they are sold at deepdiscountdvd at under $8, almost the same price as the 3-DVD set. I suspect the upcoming Forgotten Film Noir Collector's Set will be designed in a similar fashion.

Only 10 volumes! I count at least 106 noirs released by MGM, RKO, Monogram or Warner Bros. that have yet to be released. At 5 flicks apiece, that means I could be happy to volume 24! Hopefully they will have a change of heart!

I had to break down and order them from Amazon it looks like BB isn't get them or is getting them late, they had all the others on Street Date. I don't know about you guys but my BB down here is sucking big time. They are carryin g less and less titles. While I was there I had to order This Island Earth and I figured what the heack and Got Gojira too from Amazon. Course with the Holiday and free shipping I won't be seeing them for awhile.

According to the Italian press that watched THE BLACK DAHLIA at Venice, the film is just average.
Disappointing for the past DePalma fans and and not that much better for the Film-Noir aficionados.
For three/quarters the film is good, but then the part of the relevations is too mechanical and not beliavable to make the film a real good "Noir".

You mean the image below is the actual cover art for the set and not just an outer cardboard slip box?




The 3 individual releases with the poster art on the covers are not inside the above box, just the discs themselves? Is the poster art seen in the individual double-feature titles displayed anywhere inside?

If not, I think I'll go with the seperate releases myself. The packaging is not too appealing either, but oh well...

I have mixed feelings about the Lady In THe Lake, Raymond Chandler being my favorite author, The film does not follow the book, and in the movie it does give away the ending. How ever I think Robert Montgomery did an ok job as Philip Marlowe.

One thing that did bother me. In one scene Cops pick up Marlowes wallet and look his ID, The ID has Philip spelled with 2 LLs instead of 1 as in the books. Is this an oversite by the studio?

The packaging for the Hammer Film Noir Collector's set was a big dissapointment.

The cover art is the actual cover. There is NO slip case.

The case itself is needlessly thick (twice the thickness of a regular DVD case).

There are NO individual slip cases for each DVD, just the discs themselves. There is NO poster art except the one on the cover of the case.

I actually put each DVD in individual generic slip cases. I don't think that stacking DVDs the way they have done is good for storage.

My recommendation is to go with the individuals.

It is very dissapointing that VCI put no thought and consideration in presentation value of this Collector's set release.

After seeing this packaging, I have cancelled my order for the Forgotten Film Noir Collector's set and ordered individual Forgotten Film Noir DVDs.

I am glad I could share the information. I wish VCI described its products more accurately. Better yet, I wish they followed the industry standards and best practices and release the DVD sets like other companies do.

I got the UK R2 Tight Spot a couple of weeks ago, released in a new Sony/Universal Ginger Rogers collection. It's 1.85:1 anamorphic and looks very nice indeed.

Tight Spot is an interesting film noir but I felt that Ginger Rogers was completely miscast. She was quite good in Storm Warning which is part of the Ronald Reagan Collection:

Hi, Folks. First time poster, here. Found this site in my online search for noir DVD release dates. Reading some of the posts, I found myself quite amused ... because everything you guys are writing about has been going through my head for months. I love film noir ... and I'm happy that it's found a home on DVD. Just too bad it couldn't have happened sooner, huh?

I have two questions for you guys. First of all ... does anybody know if Warner plans on releasing only one noir box set per year? I'm grateful to buy whatever they're releasing, but it makes for a helluva wait. I'm really hoping that they'll release "They Live By Night" in their next wave. Last year they really made my day by releasing their "Classic Collection Volume 2" and "Point Blank" on the same day. The same this year, too, with their superb "Tough Guys Collection."

Secondly ... does anybody here have any opinions on the new Kino film noir box set? I had previously purchased "The Long Wait," which is included in this set. The transfer isn't too shabby. However, I've heard that other transfers in this set are only marginally acceptable.
