Re: Film Noir - LIST

I have to admit.... my Google aptitude served me better than my noir knowledge (noirledge?) did. I did know Dark Passage right off the bat though. I'm still kicking myself for not getting the Kiss Me Deadly question (nice one, Greg).

I know the movie, but I'll be damned if I know the specific reference(s). I'll bet my good friend (and fellow HTFer from way back) Bill Huelbig would know it, but he's apparently not playing.

That's it. That's all I've got. Craig was too good. By the way Craig, how did you google quotes? I could never find any matches.

Re: Film Noir - LIST

If my math is correct we have Greg and Irina with two points a piece.

That means that it all boils down to question 11. As question 11 is worth three points, it could even be a new contestant waltzing in and winning the second copy.

Looks like it is time to call in some favors and PM some cineastes

Meanwhile, on the East Coast it is late, see ya all tomorrow.

Greg: I had the same problem.... till I put quotation marks around the quotes as a last resort. Oh, and using just a portion of the quote instead of the entire thing (for example: "I haven't shot a man in a week" yielded a link which included Murder, My Sweet in the text).

Rich: Again, thanks a million. This was really fun.

Re: Film Noir - LIST

This is my second and final attempt at question #11.

The only remote reference to one of Fellini's movie in Chinatown I could find was 'albacore' that was mentioned twice. If not a direct reference to Fellini's Amarcord, at least it sound very close or does it sound like an apple core?

1. CURLY
I'll pay the rest next trip. We only
caught sixty ton of skipjack around
San Benedict. We hit a chubasco,
they don't pay you for skipjack the
way they do for tuna or albacore.

2. GITTES
(indicating tail)
Where did you get this material?

EMMA
(what it sounds like)
The apple core club.

GITTES
The apple core?

EMMA
No. The albacore. It's a fish. My
grandson's a member and they take
very nice care of us.

Really good idea Irina, but not it. You might want to rethink this being your last attempt as you are obviously familiar with the film.

And to help move this along, I will post significant clues starting at 2 p.m. e.s.t.

I would like to send both discs out in tomorrow's mail, so I'm confident we will have another winner by tonight.

Re: Film Noir - LIST

The Fellini Film ...

Clue 1

If you had a nice blueberry pie (it's summer) and you cut the pie right down the middle and you took only one of the two portions and served it to your family for dessert that night and they ate the entire portion, you could say that your family ...

Note: I didn't say the clues were going to be clever.

Next clue around 6 p.m. e.s.t.

Re: Film Noir - LIST

It's Fellini's 8 1/2. The title is referenced as a money amount and as a part of the address.

1.
BAGBY(O.S.)
(continuing)
The Alto Vallejo can save us from
that, and I respectfully suggest
that eight and a half million
dollars is a fair price to pay to
keep the desert from our streets
-- and not on top of them.

2.
VOICE ON PHONE
684 1/2 East Tensington -- Echo
Park. She begged me to call.
She's waiting for you.

Polanski probably felt very special about Fellini's masterpiece. His Knife in the Water was nominated against 8 1/2 for Best Foreign Language Film in 1964.

Re: Film Noir - LIST

Congratuations. We have our second winner.

Although more correctly, 848 1/2 East Kensington, Echo Park

Echo Park being appropriate as Chinatown is full of repeated themes.

Knife in the Water ... interesting film, beautifully shot.

Irina and Craig would you PM me with your shipping addresses. I'd like to send the DVDs out tomorrow before I head out of town.

Edit:

Irina, I see that you Googled the script. I wonder whether the script posting was a typo, or something that Polanski just changed on the fly?

Rich, I goggled the script and it was the only numeric 8 1/2 I could find. Thank you very much for all the fun and your generosity. Since I already own a copy of Boomerang, could you please send the second copy to Greg. He tried really hard. I hope he will enjoy it.

Re: Film Noir - LIST

As a big fan of "films noir," I've been subscribed to this thread for quite some time now. Been using it as a guide on what's new to DVD, and what I still need to rent, so I didn't really feel the need to chime in at all. But I just wanted to say what a cool and classy move it was on Rich's part to part with his copies of Boomerang!, and to do it in such an entertaining fashion.

I was able to see the film via Netflix, and I mailed it back an hour after the movie ended, so I wouldn't be tempted to keep it for myself. Funny thing is, of the 60+ noirs I've seen in the past year (it's a recent obsession), I don't think the film would land in my top-third favorites.

Great thread. Thanks fellas.

Re: Film Noir - LIST

Wow, I was just about to post a congrats to Irina when I saw her new message. Are you kidding me? Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I'm not familiar enough with Chinatown (soon to be rectified) to have gotten that question. I knew it was Fellini's 81/2 after the clue but I would have had to watch both films before coming close to the answer.

rich, again, thanks for being so generous and for the fun.

Irina, I also thank you for your generosity. And yes, I will enjoy it immensely.

Maybe some day I can repay the favour.

Greg

Hey, I meant to ask this a few days ago.... did any of you folks attend the Noir City 4 film festival in San Francisco in January? And on a related note, are any of you planning on being there in January 2007? I'm hoping to be there...

Thanks everyone for the kind words.

Irina: Thumbs up. Quite the classy move.

Greg: Well deserved. You answered a couple of tough ones. I would not have faired as well.

Herb: Thanks for putting up with us.

Craig: Funny you should mention that. I was just looking at the Noir City Film Festival and I was thinking about using a trivia question about the festival.

I'm doing a bunch of flying so I would love to make it. I haven't made any of the other ones. Looks like a fun event.

I would loved to go to the Noir City festival (this is the one run by Fast Eddie right?) but between work and family I just don't have the time. Besides, I don't know if I feel like flying anymore.

Only 5 more days until Double Indemnity! Whoo-hoo!

Re: Film Noir - LIST

Congrats to Craig, Irina and Greg. I didn't participate because I already have my Boomerang!, but great job from all. Kudos to Rich for providing copies. I sent my extra copies to a couple of my friends not in the US, including to Gary from DVD Beaver.

Irina, here's the DVD releases Herb added to the list per my suggestion:
All Night Long - was released on DVD in UK, but is currently out-of-print
Aventurera - Mexican noir, released by Facets
City of Missing Girls - available from Alpha
Dangerous Female and Satan Met a Lady - will be available in Maltese Falcon set.
Hard Guy - available from Alpha
I Mobster - available from Sony Music
Keeper of the Flame - was available in UK as part of Hepburn/Tracy boxset, but is currently OOP
Waterloo Road - was released on DVD in UK, but is currently OOP

I also suggested a few noirish films that were not on the list - Le BĂȘte humaine, Le Corbeau, Ring of Fear, Le Trou, Under Capricorn and Unfaithfully Yours. Also, the only Soviet noir I know, Delo N. 306 was recently released on DVD in Russia, unfortunately with no English subtitles.

Gregory,
Thanks for the update.

It seems that The Keeper of the Flame is still available here (as part of the box set):
http://www.hmv.co.uk/hmvweb/displayP...;-1&sku=410929

Would it make sense to add Le Jour Se Leve (available in R2 France) to the list? The Long Night was a far less superior remake. This particular edition has English subs:

Would A Man Escaped, The Wages of Fear, Quai des Orfervres or En Cas De Malheur qualify?

I just saw that The Blue Lamp will be released as an idividual title in the UK on August, 21st:

Re: Film Noir - LIST

Because Herb's criteria is
Quote:
from 1940-1960, I have included a number of titles from the mid to late 30's as well as a few from the early 60's that in my opinion, qualify as noir
. Otherwise it will open floodgates to thousands of more movies made after 1960's. Black Dahlia is not from the period of classic noir, so like Chinatown and Blade Runner it's neo-noir.
