Cry of the City (1948) is also being released in Spain on July 13th and Kiss of Death is being released on July 6th by Carlotta Films in France.

According to a review at dvdrama(http://www.dvdrama.net/fiche.php?5307), the quality is of the French Kiss of Death is awfull.

The original trailer offered in supplement presents a silver grain and a contrast superiors at that of the master of film of reference. The emulsion of rather many plans is in bad chemical state; negative and positive dust is abundant on rather many others. And certain overall plans (post-credits of opening for example, sight of New York night) are almost vague: it is fortunately rare but finally all the same! In short... the chemical copy was not correctly restored and the video master is regularly dirty. On the other hand the definition, the management of the blacks are correct. Knowing that this collection is made up of traditional films resulting from Fox, one can only be sorry to note the relative ease with which the Americans manage the state of their inheritance. They are not all the same the Parisian ones which will be given the responsability to restore the negative ones, to make withdraw new copies, to supervise digitalizations! Carlotta making deal with Fox, one expected a better result.

France is also getting a DVD of Bigger Than Life. This landmark film really ought to be appearing in the USA and/or UK very soon.
Many great Noirs have shown up in mainland Europe, with ropey transfers. Prime elements surely exist in the U.S. and optimal transfers are sorely needed.

The audio is slightly improved, but the pal speedup is particularly noticeable in MacMurray's dialogue.
Special features? 0??? Unbelievable.
If this is the same transfer and disc that Universal is planning to release in R1, then I suspect there will be a great uproar from noir fans!
Perhaps R2/4 are just getting the shaft and Universal is saving their best effort for R1, but I have my doubts.
I have sent my concerns about this disc to a rep at Universal... only time will tell.

I agree Nils. Judging by Gary's screencaps - some of the detail of the house and the palm leaves is all but gone. Granted, the original is coarser but indeed, offers greater detail. I'll be keeping my Image version till a better one comes along - I may have it a long time...

Wow, I just recorded onto dvd an HBO showing of Detective Story and the presentation was in need of some work. Also to finally have a good dvd presentation of Strange Love of Martha Ivers has me really excited. I think with those two releases that it gives us hope that Ace in the Hole is in the pipeline too.

Great news. Detective Story and The Strange Love of Martha Ivers are quintessential Noirs.
I really hope that we see Ace in the Hole soon. Paramount are doing pretty good of late with their catalogue titles (Diabolik, Prime Cut, High and the Mighty) and they must know that Ace in the Hole is in high demand. Hopefully, we'll see it soon with a some decent extras.

Actually, Manga released this awhile ago and it's a rather poor transfer. Originally a Technicolor (3D) film, but you'd never know it - the colors are terrible. Looking forward to Cry Of The City and the Woman In The Window.

So, any updates about Road House? It's listed at Amazon, but Kiss of Death was proved to be just a rumor and there's no info about any Film Noirs at Anchor Bay's own website.

Also, I noticed Cornered was released in Italy as Missione di morte in a 2-disc special edition. Unfortunately, the only extra is the colorized version of the film.

In reading Mark Evanier's newsfromme.com site today I noticed he had a blurb about "Ace in the Hole" (Saturday's entry)...
Let's hope that these reports we've been getting about the 1951 film didn't stem from confusion with this new documentary (which is a Columbia product). Of course, if Paramount listed it on their site, then there should be no confusion.

The Ace in the Hole rumor has been around for a while. First, when the Saddam H. video was first announced people assumed it was the Kirk Douglas movie. Then this latest rumor came about saying that indeed the classic noir is coming out too (not the Sony Saddam one). No official announcement yet and I've yet to find confirmaton. If anyone has a link I'd like to see it. From what I hear, the noir 'Ace' will be out in the fall.

Looks like Raw Deal and T-Men will be released by Sony Music Video on October 18. Both titles are listed at DVD Empire and Amazon. At first I thought they were Sony Pictures/MGM releases, but seeing it's Sony Music Video it will probably be another public domain discs.
