Which Panasonic DVD player to get?

Looks like the RP-82 and XP-30 are nearly identical and are top rated by hometheaterhifi.com's progressive scan DVD player shotout. Problem is they both seem to be discontinued. What is the current version of these players?

The new models are:

S35 - Pro-scan
S55 - Pro-scan, DVD-Audio
F65 - 5-disc, pro-scan
F85 - 5-disc, pro-scan, DVD-Audio

The thing is, these new models are using a new Panasonic-designed deinterlace chip instead of the coveted Sage/Faroudja chip in the models you mention.

There are a couple more places where you can pick up the XP30. Check out Pricegrabber.

Be sure to check Froogle.com as well.

I have the XP30 and it does a fine job.

I just bought my new XP30 at the local Sharper Image store at lunch today. $199, no less. If you want one, get one soon!

Jim, the 'RP82 is very difficult, if not impossible, to find new these days. I wouldn't expect the 'XP30 to be much easier to find, as like the 'RP82, it has been discontinued. One major difference between these players is that the 'RP82 handles DVD-Audio and the 'XP30 doesn't. The 'XP50 is more comparable to the 'RP82.

Is this the Panasonic XP30? Sharper Image's Web site does not appear to list the model number.

Duh! I decided to just call them and ask them myself. :b

That is indeed the Panasonic XP30S according to Sharper Image. I went ahead and ordered one.

I cannot believe I just bought this player to posssibly replace the DVD Video aspect of my Pioneer DV-47Ai.

I recently bought the new S55 from Crutchfield, with the idea that it played true DVD-A. Since it is not a 5.1 DVD-A player, I don't really need it and would like to have something with the highly toted Farudja (sp) chip in it. Would it be worth returning the S55 and ordering the one off Sharper image?
