Mine looks great on a Mitsubishi Diamond 65" WS, and with my top-of-the-line Sony DVD Player (NS999ES). I guess I'm easier to please

While Jurassic Park 3 looks excellent, I can't say the same for Jurassic Park I. There are artifacts and what looks like edge enhancement. I mean the picture looks decent, but not what I would call excellent.

On Buffy, I'd ssay it's almost guaranteed they'll use the transfers from the R1 sets. There's no sense ponying up a bunch of money to redo them for such a small market. Not that Japan is small, but the Japanese Buffy market is probably quite small as the show has barely aired there.

And obviously, the audio will probably never be transferred again at 1509.5/kbps anyway

For what it's worth, I have both the Jurassic Park DTS LD and the repressed DTS DVD and hard as I try, I can hear no appreciable difference between them. They sound like the same mix to me. So even if the dvd were full bitrate DTS, it may not make much difference.

I thought the DTS JP DVD *was* the full-bit rate. Is it not?

No, The DTS DVD is half bitrate, 754kbps. The DTS LD is 1235kbps.

I think I may get the R2 PAL Superbit Gladiator, only £10 at Play and I was annoyed the original relase wasn't 6.1.

Wow, CDJapan is expensive. They want $13.00 for s+H for 1 DVD...!!!!! dang! AmazonUK is only charging $4.50 s+h for a whole BOX SET!!!
So, to get Rollerball SE... $33 + $13 = $46... OW!!!!

Anywhere else cheaper?????

Ive been using PAL too long, dont notice it really. In some musicals it annoys me but not much else.

I posted some upcoming R2 Superbits here:

I just got the Gladiator T2 Superbit and depressingly it does not have the DTS-ES Discrete mix - only registers as matrix on my Denon AV1SR.

Not sure about any picture quality differences yet.

Best Regards

I am not an expert so heres what I was able to find. My equipment to look at the picture quality is listed but to get the Mbps rate of each disc I used a Pioneer player which is the only player I have that displays this information. (To be honest I am not even sure if this is what people go on)

Any thoughts on what I should be looking for to compare?

As for the Discrete/Matrix audio track I think my AV always displays DTS-ES Matrix for all DTS playback so I think that the Superbit disc onlys has the regular DTS soundtrack.

All values are approx as it was jumping around quite alot.
Region 1 DTS-ES DVD
Scene 2 - 6.9Mbps
Scene 12 - 8.3Mbps
scene 19 - 7.9Mbps

Region 2 Superbit DVD
Scene 2 - 6.1Mbps
Scene 12 - 8.6Mbps
scene 19 - between 5.7Mbps & 9.7Mbps
(the value here was jumping around so much I could'nt give it a proper value)

Equipment used:

Denon AVC-A1SR (AVR-5803 in USA)
Arcam DV88 + Progressive Scan
Bang & Olufsen Beovison Avant TV
Sony VPL-VW10HT Projector

I havent done the picture quality test yet but thought I would post what I have done so far.

Best Regards

Dave,

Are the Japan Superbits on par with Region 1 Superbits? Bjoern (whatever happened to him?) did a review of a Superbit Godzilla (Region skips me) and it was not very impressive.

That stupid thing called 'real life' caught me for the last 6 month. Schedule just cleared up considerably, so i will have time to post here again and write some stuff for my website.

Don't have any of the japanese Superbits yet, mostly because for a simple quality analysis, they simply are too expensive (anyone have a cheaper source to europe than CDJapan?). As i know me, i might end up buying some.

But i did just get the new UK R2 PAL Superbit version of Gladiator. VERY interesting, to say the least! Will probably post a Gladiator mega shootout (R1, R2, R2 SB, HD). I know someone who has the japanese R1 Superbit, so i might route him through providing the corresponding shots from that, so that the review is 'complete'.

That review of the french R2 Gladiator SB you mentioned is most likely not an indication of R2 SB titles in general. That was the only title of those ugly cased french SBs that were release at that time, that i had my fingers on. Maybe all of them were duds.

But i also watched a few of the Col/Tri UK R2 Superbit titles (e.g. Desperado) and they are excellent.

And now, the first UK SB title of a non-Col/Tri title (Gladiator), appears to top even those!

Will try to explain why that might be so...

Regards
Bjoern

Greetings Bjoern,

I am interested in the Japan "Gladiator" SB. (Would rather get that version to avoid PAL-speedup...) I have always been fond of my original r1 release but if the SB is noticeably improved, I might have to get it. I agree about the prices over there too.

So far a couple of people have said that it looks inproved detail and color-wise. It would be great to have your opinion.
