Although not 100% confirmed, I am slightly confident.

I guess we will have to wait for the early reviews before we can be sure, but its a nice little slice of hope to know something is being done.

The Wonder Years R2 release

I've just looked at the list of upcoming UK releases, and listed for March 13th is "The Wonder Years - Season 1". The RRP is £39.99 (about $80) so I can't believe it's the actual 6-episode season 1. Whether it is seasons 1 & 2 combined, or a "best-of" I don't know, as I can't find an episode listing anywhere yet. I would also need to know the extent of any music editing before I splashed out for it.

Very strange how this (and St Elsewhere) are getting a UK release before a US release.

Don't many British releases of American shows have music intact where the Region 1 counterparts do not?

What I don't understand is that one month before release there's stil no official announcement, and it's not listed on FOX's UK site either. Interestingly, this was also to be released in Germany sometime in the first quarter of 2006. But after there was no announcement somebody on a German DVD forum emailed FOX Germany and they replied that the release has been put on hold due to rights issues for the time being.

Obviously, "rights issues" screams "music" so I'd like to point out that music that is intact in the UK is generally also intact in Germany... and even more so (e.g. the music on Dawson's Creek is completely intact on the German dub track, but replaced on the English language track).

I have a great fear that with no official information it will be taken off at the last minute.

It certainly does not seem to be happening with less than a month left.

I don't understand why sites would put it up for pre-order before it was officially announced - it has been online for 2 weeks now.

I noticed that this was slated to come out as well in the UK. I was wondering the same things. If this is, say S1/S2 and intact, then I might have to finally look at a region free player.

Who owns The Wonder Years?

I thought it was Fox, TVShowsonDVD lists Fox along with an article mentioning Fox releasing it.

http://www.sitcomsonline.com/blog/20...rner-bros.html

Lists The Wonder Years as one of the new shows going to iTV - so Warner Bros. owns it?

I can't see how it could go from New World -> Fox -> WB?

Re: Who owns The Wonder Years?

This doesn't answer your question, but The Wonder Years is currently scheduled for a December release here in the UK. No idea which company is bringing this out however - or indeed whether it will actually come out at all.

St. Elsewhere is also meant to be coming out on DVD here in Britain too - but the release keeps being postponed. Current scheduled date is 7th August for the first season.

Re: Who owns The Wonder Years?

Warner Bros. owns the TV broadcast rights. Fox owns the home entertainment rights, and possibly the cable TV broadcast rights (although that might be Warner now, too).

Don't count on it. I have been tracking that release and it got pushed back from March 13th (2006), to December (on some sites) - it seems like a no-go.
I guess it is Fox.

I contacted Fox UK & US and got no reply, the australian fox company gave a 'we'll think about it' reply.

Re: Who owns The Wonder Years?

It always pays to ask the right question - didn't you mean to ask why this isn't out on DVD yet?

Fox only partially owns it. The majority of its real ownership is tied up with the license holders of all of the music in it.

Re: Who owns The Wonder Years?

My understanding was the main inhibitor to a "Wonder Years" release was sorting out the rights to all the songs used throughout the series.

The Wonder Years - Music Issues

After reading this news item on TVShowsonDVD.com, I got to thinking. Do you think studios could benefit from putting two versions of a season out? One with the original music for die hard fans of the show, that they could charge an excessive amount more for, and one with replacement music, that they could charge a more reasonable price. I for one would possibly buy the more expensive one to hear the original music. Do you think that this is a possible solution, not only for The Wonder Years, but for other shows that have been plagued by music replacement, or do you think that the studios would lose too much money?

Re: The Wonder Years - Music Issues

Well, some songs just can't be licensed.

I don't think it could be profitable, it would be pretty funny though if the original music DVD cost in the regions of $100s you could tell that to the people who moan about music replacement.

I would like any possible original music, but I'd rather the episodes, I can't even remember half of it and I do not think 20 seconds of background noise is more important than 22 minutes of the show.

It looks like those of us who recognized what a quality series it was and taped and archived the original broadcasts have a lot of transferring to do.

With a "period" show like THE WONDER YEARS, and especially one in which the music was so intricately tied into the "mood" or "feel" of the show, it's a tough call.

Here's a list of some of the songs which were used in the show, all of which would have to be licensed, as well as references to how they were incorporated into the show:

http://mytwyyearbook.tripod.com/jukebox.html

Some are mere background, but there are many cases where the music is used as necessary "puctuation" for a scene.

I know some might disagree, but, for me at least, this particular show just wouldn't -- COULDN'T -- be the same without the original music.

Ditto WKRP.

Ditto Quantum Leap. Which is why I only own S1 of QL. I may end up buying a multi-region player just so I can have this series unbutchered, since the licensing issues only affected the R1 releases.

Ditto La Femme Nikita...which is why I don't flinch one bit at the high price on this one...it is WELL worth it, IMO.

Just my own priorities, of course.

Re: The Wonder Years - Music Issues

Watching that without music is like watching Beavis & Butthead without the videos. Its just not even close to the same. I would not buy it if less than 90% of the original music were there.

Re: The Wonder Years - Music Issues

How did the UK release of this handle the music?

I know some music in the show might be more essential than other music but if they must replace some incidental music in the background, they should still go with something proper from the period.

Music labels should be made aware that putting their music in these shows on DVD serves as advertisement for music that sometimes no longer get airtime on radio. Some of this music is out of mind, some people have forgotten it. If I hear something on boxsets of Wonder Years, China Beach, and WKRP that I have not heard in years, I might be inclined to purchase an album. If I have never heard a song before in my life and heard it on these shows I would probably be inclined to investigate them further. By not allowing classic songs to appear in classic television on DVD, those who own the rights are destroying the music's cultural significance and longevity of life. They are stabbing themselves in the foot by making this matter more complicated than it has to be.
Please sign our petition to get Warner to release DVDs of all films that they can featuring Bert Wheeler, Robert Woolsey and/or Dorothy Lee.

It keeps getting delayed. Amazon.co.uk now lists a August 7 release date, but so far I haven't stumbled over an official announcement, so I doubt it'll happen on that date.

That's good for two seasons, but the newly-released S4 has the same music replacement in R2.

In the article Gord linked, the author mentioned a "memorable moment" where Kevin climbs a tree to see Winnie, as Seger's We've Got Tonight plays. Is that accurate? The song is from 1978, which seems pretty far outside of the show's timeframe.

Edit: Nevermind. I found the answer:

Quote:
The song "We've Got Tonight" by Bob Seger is used in this episode. This song was first on an album in 1978, well after this episode takes place.

The UK release is a no go, its delayed and delayed.

The UK couldn't even be uncut, they had to replace some songs just to broadcast it here. The Pilot sounds completely different.

Thanks for the heads up! I honestly hadn't been paying close attention, since I don't yet have a multi-region player. After the whole R1 music replacement issue, I just sorta put the show on a back burner, but I knew that S2 and S3 had been issued unbutchered in R2. I just assumed the rest would be...

I guess that puts this one off my radar for good...and it was one of my favorite shows.
