#$(*&@#$ !!!!! Piece of C*&$ , S&#$(& #*$& Primer!!!!!

ok....so I was all excited about finishing up my 2way's and stands (http://www.dslextreme.com/users/loui...mrendering.jpg) this weekend. I was just waiting for the 24hrs for the trace solvent to evaporate from the truckbed liner spray (duplicolor...which by the way...makes you high as a kite....even in the outdoors ). 24 house was just about up and I do to move the enclosures to an area to add the guts....but wait..something feels weird....the #$)(*&#*&5 (*%&$#(&%$#985 4a#$(*&($*%#$%&@#95elkfjlsdjf!!!!!!!! ...top coat started delaminating!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (insert all the foul language you want).

so why did it do that do you ask...well...when I was at the store, I needed to get some more black primer as an undercoat...the store only had some general purpose sand-able primer (iirc, it has blueish green lettering/images on a white back drop..think generic). It wasn't what I usually used, but I was like.."what the hell. it is just the primer coat".

Well, when I first started spraying it on I noticed that it only sprayed out 20% (tops) primer solids (color) compared to the normal krylon/rustolium stuff. ..the rest was just solvent. #$*&!!! "I'm returning this #$*"....but I decided to finish up the can before running off to other stores to find the primer I wanted.

...so how do I know it was the primer that caused the delamination? Simple, the area that I used it (30% the enclosure) was really easy to re-strip...the other, ..that I used a different primer on...was a biotch to remove!"

...so yesterday, I spent popping the side panels (which was a pain in the arse!), stripping the enclosure down to bare MDF, and re-gluing up the side panels. Since I only get to work on these on the weekends, I have to wait another 2 weeks to get them both up

...the good news is, the first sounds/looks awesome...albeit mono

bummer man i feel your pain, i wanted to try the Hammer look, so i built a monitor stand out of MDF and i gave it a coat of Hammer on one side, but i only let it dry about 6 hours and then set that side down to paint the opisit side, latter did i realize that it compleatly stuck to the newspaper on one side, crap, time to sand and repaint.

I had the same problem. I used the recommended primer on all of my HT but the center channel. I used a different sandable primer on my center. The bed-liner is now flaking from my center channel.

Dang, that sucks! Nothing worse than sanding down and restarting.

Are you sure it's really coming off? Sometimes when sniffing paint (recreationally, of course) I'm convinced my face is melting.

Although this may not help at this point, I just wanted to mention that I ONLY purchase spray paint from automotive parts stores nowadays. I also only use Spray Primer "Filler". This stuff is fantastic. It is so much easier to use than normal spray primer. It is sandable just like the regular stuff, but it builds up very heavy on the surface without any irregularities. This is the kind of primer that you can spray on incredibly thick (if you want to) with no undesirable results. I mean THICK!!

It dries extremely fast and I have never had any problems with drips or runs of any kind. You just wet sand it flat and you are good to go. I typically buy it in the "grey" variety. It costs about $4.00 a can. I will never use anything else again. Hope that this helps.

The primer I used that WORKED is varnish based. It dries really quickly as well and builds up fairly well.

if i had the cash i would invest the 100 bucks into an automotive spray gun and mix my own primer. my dad knows how to do it we repainted a few antique cars we have the compressor and everything else, the gun we did have never got cleaned and choked to death.

When it comes to paints... I have a body shop mix up the
good stuff and put it in aerosol form.. Of course you can't
do this with the truck bed spray as most body shops don't
carry the raw materials to mix that type of paint.

Just a few weeks ago I bought 6 cans of Martin Senior
Arcrylic Enamel code PQX (Black) to spray my Lund Visor,
Lund Eclipse Hood Scoops and Lund Step Mates for my Dodge
Dakota. The Arcrylic Enamel lays down smooth and it's just
a single stage paint (buff the base coat).

Not cheap though... $60.00 for 6 cans

I must admit though.. when it comes to spray bombs.. I am
Da B0mb!

I bet you just got a bad can. I've worked with polycarbonate spray paints on lexan and every once in a while I'll get a can that has a bad mix or is too old which can really mess up a paint job.

You are primering a surface that is going to be textured so why all the fuss about using a spray on?

I mean Spray Bombs as in Aerosol Containers...
