It's official -- Peter Jackson's next film: King Kong

I just watched that 720p hi-rez quicktime that Jefferson had linked on the last page, and Holy Smokes! Peter Jackson has lost a lot of weight. In fact, in that video he looks very much like Dominic Monaghan.

The effects in that video appear rough and from the older build of Kong. I am hoping for much better in the final cut. Still, I like a lot of the angles and the tracking of the shots shown. Looks like it will be a winner for sure.

PJ has lost alot of weight. Looks like he highlighted his hair too. Good for him. I'm glad he's taken better care of himself.

OK, just watched the low-res version of the trailer . . . OMG, this movie is going to be awesome - and hopefully make a ton of money.

Universal asked them to remove the trailer...

Oh well, guess I'll have to wait until tonight. Can't wait!

I plan on converting the 720p trailer (when it comes out) to WMVHD 720p as none of my computers play the HD quicktime smoothly, and I got some beefy PCs. It seems like they intentionally crippled it on the PC. Silly apple.

I'm not even gonna watch it til its converted then fire it up on the projector

Anyway I'll post the WMVHD link once its uploaded somewhere.

But they removed a still of the Kong schematics and a still from the film with the pteradactyl.

I have the original file, if anyone wants it.

When I was in Cambridge the other day, I popped into the Apple Store and tried playing the 1080p version on their showcased G5 with the huge ass Cinema something-or-another monitor.
Needless to say, it played like a freakin' slideshow.

This second trailer looks more impressive than the first one, and I'm not talking about the visual effects.

You mean the new film? At what time stamp is it?

That's funny...I was in London today and popped into the Apple Store and tried playing the 1080p version on their showcased G5 - a Dual-Core 2GHz - with the huge ass Cinema Display. It played smoothly, and drew a crowd of people.

Thanks for the links, Lars.

Hmm...when I try to get the 720p version the download keeps quitting at the halfway point. Anyone else having this problem?

Phew, if it was Star Wars, you had to pay for the 480 version and probably sell your house for the HD 1080 trailer!

For some reason I can't even view the normal (non-HD) trailer. I get sound but no picture. I have no problem playing other trailers from apple.com
Anyone have any ideas?

Do you have Quicktime 7? It is required now...

You can download the standalone (without iTunes) version here: http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/standalone.html

Thanks, Lars, for the links.

I was talking to a friend of mine that works at Weta, and he was telling me that he actually got to touch the original Kong model frame. And even put it in a pose.

Words cannot describe how envious I was.

I got the new Quicktime and still no video. I can't figure it out, why do the other trailers play fine.

Don't have the actual times, but the revised version of the 8 Weeks to Go diary has those two photos removed from it.

I have seen that on occasion as well. Restarting the browser and/or the computer solved it for me.

Looks great, even if all of Jack Black's dialogue reminds me of the bridge of a Tenacious D song.

I complained about this for the last trailer and it's still true on this one. Some shots looked like a video game.
But there are two crucial improvements from the last trailer. The practical sets and props looked phenominal. And the most important special effect of all, Kong, they got absolutely right this time. In the last trailer he was a large ape, in this one he is the true montrous being he should be. It's impressive that he doesn't lose that quality even in the sensitive shots. Getting rid of the pot belly and aging the head made a huge difference for my perception of the character.

Aside from the really piss poor CG scenery, this is going to be the other big hang-up for me. It's going to be hard to disassociate Jack Black from the Jack Black persona. This is more my problem than the movie's though; I think any Carl Denham needs a little Jack Black in him, and I bet for people that haven't been exposed to Black already he'll be perfect. It doesn't help that all of his voiceovers have been just the sort of broad epic statements that Tenacious D songs like to make.

This trailer was a beast to download; just moving it from my temp folder to my save folder really strained resources. Playback on the 720p version was damn near flawless, though. Once it cut away from the super wide shots, I could invest in it more.

I love the CG scenery. It might not look photoreal, but the way it's lit and colored gives it a great fantastical storybook quality, and it suits the material perfectly.

Great trailer. The scale and the material between Ann and Kong convinces me it might sustain the 3 hour runtime.

Looks good in 1080p. Although the gradients against a black backdrop were a very obvious set of rings, for the most part everything else looked grand, all things considered. It's only about ~13.3 gigs to get the full 3 hour film in 1080p at that quality, so that seems pretty efficient.

I am glad they dropped the snaggle-toothed grumpy old poop-butt Kong and replaced him with this one.

Good stuff, but I have a hard time taking Jack Black seriously.

the island people are supposed to be white with mud over them?

CG looks better.

The 70s version had him bigger? Or is it just the cover? 30s version looked bigger on building, or building was smaller?

My oh My, this new trailer has upped my anticipation 10 fold for this.

Can't wait to see the 33 Kong for the first time in a few weeks - and drag all my friends who hate black and white movies into watching it .

If Kong meets even half my expectations this December, it looks like I'll be quite happy.

As I promised before, here is the 720p Windows Media 9 version for those who can't play the quicktime HD smoothly.

http://files.filefront.com/KingKongT.../fileinfo.html

Don't worry, filefront doesn't require registration. There's a couple frames that pixelate (during a white flash) but it's nothing too bad. Couldn't get rid of it.
