On my TV screen, the effects looked ATROCIOUS; I've seen TV shows with better integrated effects... looks as plastic as AOTC did.

There must be something wrong with your TV screen.

Indeed not; just watched it at the VW site and the effects are still awful. You can tell exactly where the live action leaves off and where the CG begins in that 30's New York shot because nothing past that point on the horizon movies. Otherwise, it was pretty acceptable until right after Ann Darrow screams and then the CG is simply awful from that point point on. I can't believe the work is from the same FX house as LOTR; I never once believed that they were actually on a desert island; atleast make the fucking clouds and water look real. Lost World had better dinos, too.
Big shame; I was really looking forward to this project and I hope they can clean it up by December, but this wasn't impressive to me at all, visually.

Since it was a teaser trailer and none of the effects shots are in a finished state, I wouldn't worry about it. The "feel" is right, I'm confident the technical end will come through.

Adam,

I'm in agreement with you. I wasn't impressed by the cg in the trailer either. But I think like AOTC, these shots aren't fully finished yet. Still I'm very much looking forward to seeing this when it comes out.

Adam, relax, release date is months away.

The trailer is far more revealing than I expected. I didn't think we would see Kong in full before release day.

Given that the film is six months from release, I seriously doubt these shots are completely finished. Parts of it didn't look right to me, either, but I have FULL confidence in PJ and the Weta team to have all their dinosaurs in a row come December 14.

And it was even better than I expected!

Scream, Ann...scream for your life!
*Shriek!*
RRROOOOWWWWAAAAARRRRRRR!!!

*WTF! gasping stares all around*

There was one of the earlier web docs that showed the FX guys specifically doing a rush job to finish shots JUST for the trailer. These aren't FINALS I wouldn't think.

and hell, even if they are--the movement in the frame might just be enough to make me forgive it. This picture looks GORGEOUSLY shot.

the ONLY real corn moment for me? That one ship guy running and jumping like he's trying out for the Mario Bros movie, knocking a raptor out with one boot. bleh.

And I gotta say WOW. The shot of Kong snatching Ann away from the jaws of the rex .... gave me goose bumps and made me clap my hands like a little girl.

Oh, and unrelated: WOTW =

Ugh, they better fix that CG, or they better be going for a fake look, cause it looks atrocious as Adam said.

It doesn't to me, atleast not the skull island stuff. I dug all of the NY stuff with the exception of that one establishing shot, and the Venture establishing shot and Ann Darrow walking up the plank was transcendantly moving. But as soon as we get to skull island, cheap sky replacements, very flat lighting, and static and tracking shots mixed together in an unappealing manner. I was hoping Kong would be like Batman in Batman Begins; an idea greater than the creature itself. One of the many things I admire about the original is the way that once Kong enters the scene, the film pauses and takes the time to really capture and admire its creation. Kong is enormous and truly dominates the frame and the action. With the exception of the shot of the eyes, I didn't get that feel from this creation. He felt more Mighty Joe Young than King Kong.

I really hope Jackson proves me wrong with the final product.

Well, I'm pretty sure they're going to save THE revelation money-shot for the movie, and not give away Kong's entrance in a trailer.

Remember the early shots of Gollum from "The Two Towers" teasers and trailers... hardly looked anything like the Gollum we finally got.

Here are some screen shots we took from our High Definition recording (something you might want to look into Adam ). We tried to get more "action" shots but none of them came out.

WARNING, THERE ARE SPOILERS OF KONG HIMSELF, for those who haven't seen it.

I'm probably very biased since I love dinosaurs, but that's what got me the most excited about this teaser. When watching the original Kong I always thought the most magical thing about that movie was that Skull Island had not just a giant ape, but prehistoric dinosaurs as well which is why I was so greatly disappointed in the 1976 remake (among other things).

For me, this teaser was the best I've seen in a long time. Really seems magical. Reminds me a lot of "The Fellowship of the Ring" trailer actually.

Ooops again, Travis deleted his post! (For those who missed it, he gave the URL I posted at Oscarwatch, then he saw that I posted the same thing here, and deleted his post, and then I posted an ooops, and here we all are.)

I LOVE THAT TRAILER!

Yeah, we posted at the exact same time. When I saw that you posted them yourself, I changed my post. Sorry for the confusion.

And on topic: I was a little concerned when I heard Jack Black was cast, but after seeing the trailer, it looks like he is perfect for the role.

Just about what I expected. The shots I thought looked good in low-res look phenominal in high-res; the close-up of Kong is particularly great. The shots I didn't like are even more obviously bad in high res. The one of the jungle arch has particularly bad rotoscoping and horrible detail.

Lest people think I'm a relentlessly negative thread crapper, I will have to agree with this. Black's reigned himself in quite a bit, but the trapped energy practically bursting at the seams captures the mischievious qualities Robert Armstrong brought to Denham. That aspect would have been lost with a more dignified actor. Black makes a great Carl Denham.

As well-realized as the period New York scenes seem to be, I wish Jackson would take on Time and Again.

The trailer looked like a lot of fun, but Adam I agree with you 210% the CGI looked BAD. And no matter which way you cut it - high definition makes bad effects look WORSE. It's mostly animation issues here.

I'm sure the VFX will get the workover they need over the next few months, and I'm really happy to see PJ/WETA take a note from the Wachowskis/ESC & Lucas/ILM by picking a wide angle and holding for the Kong saving Ann from the Rex shot. Nothing cooler than seeing the tools used by experienced CGI teams. That alone has got me excited for this one.
