Iron Man (New Line sets 2005 release date)

While that's true in many cases I think this is an unfair statement towards "The Ultimates." And I'm sorry I just have to make this clear (it may already be but it maybe it's not). Marvel has something called "The Ultimate Universe." A few years ago Marvel decided to make a line of comics outside of it's Original Universe to get new readers into comics as well as tell classic stories with a new twist (among the comics include Ultimate versions of Spider-man, Fantastic Four, X-Men and The Avengers who are have been renamed The Ultimates).

These books weren't made to stab at the Originals, just provide another option. Some of todays comic best writers and artists got together and have done a great job on the "Ultimate" line of books (pick up a trade paper back if you come across one).

I think a lot of times people who aren't familiar with the "Ultimate" book line think that they (whomever they might be) belive that this is supposed to be considered the "ultimate" version of characters or what have you. Remember, it's just another line of books. I myself still enjoy books from the Original Universe, like we've all said, they're the books we grew up with.

That said I don't think that Iron Man as he has been seen in the Ultimate Universe has had a lot of influence from Asian Animation. Most often in the "Ultimate Universe" (especially The Ultimates) things are drawn in a more realistic way. I'm just saying that I like the design idea behind Ultimate Iron Man. Like it has been said here before, often times filmmakers have to make slight alterations to heroes to make them more accessible, believable or what have you (come on, how would the X-Men have looked in Yellow and Blue Tights?).

I see where you're coming from thinking that Iron Man does not belong in a tank-like suit. I may have mis spoke in that regard. It's still very much a suit, it's just like you would belive a suit made to with hold a great deal of damage would be. Can you imagine Iron Man getting blasted with such a form fitting suit on the Silver Screen? Today's audiences would tear that apart. What works in the comics may not always work on the screen. Just throwing my two cents out there.

JoSAN you bring up some great points. Don't get me wrong though, I would ultimately (no pun intended) love to see Iron Man in the suit we all know that has become iconic (red and yellow). I gotta say all this Iron Man talk has got me really excited for this movie. Too bad it's not even in production yet.

The Batsuits could be a good example of Iron Man armor.

Although I actually kind of like the design below,Id prefer if they stayed away from the newer versions and keep the more classic look.

I agree JonZ. I so very badly want an Iron Man movie that doesn't suck. I want to watch powered armor in action on the screen....

if you had to pitch this property to a studio that was hesitant about investing $100-150 mil in 'another comic book movie'- how would you pitch it?

if it were me, i would tell the prospective studio "James Bond is going the way of the dime novel and amos &andy...here, my friends, is the James Bond franchise of the 21st century..."

and if they aim the property for the same demographic they were aiming Bond at w/ Dr No, they should be ok.
eventually every property enters the popular culture where it gets dumbed down to adolescent levels thru repetition- but if they start out aiming the film at 12 yr olds, they are going to find themselves going nowhere fast.

Dang. The really cruel thing is that the article I saw that had Cassevetes back on mentioned that it had looked like Alex Proyas for a while. Now that would have rocked.

Also, I hope like heck they don't go with a chunky, retro-looking armor. Maybe when Stark is initially building it to escape from an POW camp, but a big part of the character is that Stark is an inveterate tinkerer driven to make things better. For him to keep it mechanical rather than high-tech would be disappointing.

I totally disagree. If they could capture the Iron Man suit from when I read in the '80s, that would be perfect. We don't need another Green Goblin updated mess. At the store today, I was seeing the kind of crap CGI I hope they will avoid, and it was Proyas's I, Robot.

Ah, judging someone by their worst work. Personally, I'd be thrilled to see the guy who made Dark City and The Crow on it, even if he is also the guy who made I, Robot.

Of course, your response points up one of the big issues with doing Iron Man as a movie - he really doesn't have a single iconic look. The armor gets redesigned in the comic book every year and a half or so it seems, and everyone loves the way it was when they first encountered the character.

I didn't even think there was too much wrong with the way I, Robot was directed, anyway. The biggest weight on the film is Akiva Goldsman's scripting.

Still think this should be Tom Sellek. It's not like he needs to do any stunts outside the suit anyway. Definately someone with a mustache

Any new word on this? Lately, I'm wanting to see me some Iron Man!

Couple months late, but let me address this real quick. When I said I wanted the armor from the '80s, I don't really mean the exact lines of that armor. I mainly meant to distinguish it from the original and second Iron Man suits (if going from grey to yellow constituted a second suit), which were big and bulky like you also don't want. As far as I know, unless there have been big changes recently, Iron Man has looked fairly similar from about his ninth comic or so: roughly form-fitting armor, with a red torso, boots and gloves, and either gold or silver arms and legs. I don't even think we disagree about this, rereading your post. I was just being petulant about Proyas, I think, and for no real good reason.

I'm definitely for Ant-Man, but only if he becomes Giant-Man, too. Surely they wouldn't neglect that aspect of the character.

Wow, Marvel is really pumping these things out. Ant-Man? That sounds interesting, but I think I'd rather see him in the context of the Avengers.

Yeah, but only if they come to pass. The article mentions that Self worked on Deathlok and Namor. Never saw either of those released.

Ant-Man not only needs Giant-Man, but it needs the Wasp. I can just see the opening: Pym is walking through a giant cavern, and it soon becomes apparent that he is in an anthill.

You're bound to get attacked for not liking Robocop, but I agree completely. Every one of Paul Verhoeven's movies I've seen (and I've stopped watching them for at least 9 years now) has fascist overtones, *especially* Robocop. It was also the era in which the movie came out -- it was released in '87 or '88 during the Reagan "law and order" years. I didn't like those guys then and I don't like 'em now. Authority needs to have substance, and Robocop didn't.
