If I remember correctly, the bulk of Union was supposed to be the second Anderson/Bruford/Wakeman/Howe record, which was basically Yes minus Chris Squire. Most of the tunes on Union have Tony Levin on bass, and it's one of my favorite bass performances anywhere. Fragile and 90125 are close seconds for me, but Union is what I enjoy the most from them.

I'm keeping my list kinda short so that it truly reflects my absolute favorite groups. Here goes:
  • U2 - Unforgettable Fire
  • Pink Floyd - The Final Cut (Really!)
  • Metallica - Master of Puppets
  • Queensryche - Rage for Order, Mindcrime, and Empire, all for different reasons
  • Yes - Close to the Edge
  • Indigo Girls - Swamp Ophelia
  • Rush - Moving Pictures

I was surprised by that too...it's a good album, but my personal preference puts at least 4 other Yes albums ahead of Union.

Re: Union ...I had high hopes for that when it came out, but the producer and supporting cast drowned the whole record for me. Nice little bits from Bruford and Levin, but most of Howe and Wakeman's parts were replaced by studio hacks. Rabin saved the day in a couple of pieces. I still think Miracle of Life is a great track. Anyway, I'm not much of a Yes fan anymore, but I do treasure the early stuff.

I'd never heard that before about studio musicians replacing Howe and Wakeman's aprts. I knoew that they cut a lot of what Wakeman was doing though. That's too bad...

I know, I know. It's got a lot of the same appeal as The Wall but tighter, more focused. Not long ago I would have listed DSOTM, but I listened to the SACD so much I need a break from even reminding myself how much I like that album.

Here's some that I could think of:

Angra - Rebirth (I was actually turned on to these guys by a thread on this forum a while back)
Cynic - Focus (Takes a little getting used to, but very interesting and these guys were great live)
Dave Matthews Band - Crash (There's just something about this album that really fits my mood sometimes)
Dream Theater - Scenes from a Memory (Their masterpiece IMHO)
Enya - Watermark (Just beautiful from beginning to end)
Fates Warning - Parallels (I know most people prefer Perfect Symmetry, but Parallels was my first exposure to Fates Warning so it has always been my favorite)
Helloween - Keeper of the 7 Keys Part 1 (This is one of the first CDs I ever bought and I still listen to it all the time)
Iron Maiden - Powerslave
Jewel - Spirit (Beautiful voice, great songwriter)
King Diamond - Them (I'm a sucker for a good concept album)
King's X - Gretchen Goes to Nebraska (If I even hear the first notes of 'Out of the Silent Planet' I have to hear the whole album)
Megadeth - Rust in Peace
Metallica - Master of Puppets
Pantera - Cowboys from Hell (Perfect album for commuting in Boston :))
Queensryche - The Warning (Not their most polished album, but there is just something about this group of songs)
Rush - Hemishperes (That was a hard decision. Ask me tomorrow and I'll probably give you a different answer)
TNT - Tell No Tales
Triumph - Thunder Seven
Zebra - Zebra (Who's Behind the Door? Need I say more?)

Oh, I almost forgot...
Thanks Tony for that link to Killswitch Engage in your sig. I'm always looking for something new to listen to and I'm enjoying them. I think I'll be picking up this album soon :)
