Woah, only 3!? I'm gonna have to split it into classic and contemporary like someone else did, even then its tough:
Classic: (films change now and then)
Frank Capra (mentioned yet?)
1. It's a Wonderful Life
2. You Can't Take it With You
3. Arsenic and Old Lace
Alfred Hitchcock
1. Vertigo
2. Rear Window
3. Psycho
David Lean
1. Lawrence of Arabia
2. Bridge on the River Kwai
3. Oliver Twist
Stanley Kubrick
1. 2001: A Space Odyssey
1. Dr Strangelove (tie with 2001)
3. The Shining
----------
Contemporary
Steven Speilberg
1. Jaws
2. Indiana Jones Trilogy
3. Schindler's List
Oliver Stone
1. JFK
2. Born on the 4th of July
3. Natural Born Killers
Robert Zemeckis
1. Who Framed Roger Rabbit
2. Back to the Future Trilogy
3. Forrest Gump
There are so many others (John Ford, Howard Hawks, Akira Kurosawa, Paul Thomas Anderson, David Fincher to name a miniscule amount)., but those are most likely the faves for me.

Hmm, that's debateable, as Lucas probably really did direct. He just didn't technically direct. My understanding is everything he wanted in the film went in. Kirshner did a good job, but basically this was Lucas film. Always felt like Lucas let Kirshner and Marquand direct because he could control them. Maybe not, who knows. Regardless, ESB and ROTJ have Lucas' hands all over them :)

I'm not so sure about that. I mean, what's the point of hiring a director if you're always gonna tell him what to do? Might as well just do it yourself and save the money.
I agree that all the Star Wars movies are Lucas' babies, but I also think that Irvin Kershner was more than just a "yes-man". He did a fantastic job with The Empire Strikes Back, and we have to give him credit for that.

No Jack, that was intentional. :)
I was just curious as to what you would say if you saw both Kubrick and 2010 mentioned on the same line...your words were not nearly as profane or funny as I hoped for, but oh well. :)
(And for the record: I admire 2010...though it will never ever be in the same league as 2001.)

Eve,

You are aware that Tim Burton did not direct Nightmare Before Christmas (he did produce and do most of the initial story and design work, though) and had even less to do with James and the Giant Peach, right? On the other hand, I share your assessment of which titles are his best work, so no big argument really.

Regards,
