At this point, Dave, we don't know. Microsoft have said that initially, the Xbox360 will not be capable of playing every Xbox game. Right now, they haven't listed which ones will be playable - they've said they'll issue a list in about two weeks & that as time goes on, they will be adding more titles for backwards compatibility.

So it's really hard to give you a definitive yes or no at this point.

Basically, a chipped xbox is an xbox that has been modded to play pirated games and run unofficial software. You'll probably pay more for a used, modded xbox than you would for a standard one.

At this point though, the safest option would be to buy a cheap standard Xbox and play the games you want now, and then upgrade later on. The 360 will be back compatable with "best selling xbox games", which means Halo, Halo2, and who knows what else. Basically, back compatability will be done through a game-specific patch. At some point, they may be able to release a full compatability layer that emulates the Xbox hardware on the 360, but so far there's no confirmation.

The best option is probably to wait until November, when there'll probably be a full list of what works and what doesn't.

I agree with waiting till November. Its almost pointless to get an XBox now to have its replacement come out in approx 40 days. As for what will be backward compatible there will be a list of the games posted soon.

Gamespot just posted some major updates for the 360, new screen shots and video clips and I have to say its going to be a great time for gamers this next couple of years between the 360 and PS3.
