There was no pre-launch online ordering for the iPad 2. I think online ordering went live when the stores had it. If you ordered online, you got it a week or three after it was first available at stores.


And there's the iPhone 4 effect where Apple and AT&T crash due to online ordering and you can't pre-order online. Maybe that's better now?

I think you are wrong.


I remember preordering the iPad 2 right before its release.


Since I ordered it 7 hours after it went up for preorder, mine was delayed a week after it went on sale.

Those who ordered it 8 hours after it went up for preorder had to wait almost 2 weeks.

That was the deal: if you wanted an iPad release day, you had to get in line and buy retail. If you ordered online, you got it a few days to a few weeks later.


Which was still smarter than standing outside BestBuy or Verizon, since that's what I did and still had to wait a couple weeks to get my wife's iPad.

I went to the Apple store on saturday morning. 15 minutes before the store opened. I was 8th in line and bought it in 3 minutes. I got lucky. My co-workers waited a few weeks. Next time, say the iPad5, I'll just order online and get it when it gets there, doubt i'll get that lucky again.

There were no pre-orders of the iPad 2, because there was a severe shortage of iPad 2's at launch (don't remember what part was the problem).

I haven't heard of any rumors of iPad 3 shortages (there plenty of such (correct) rumors prior the 2 launch), so I suspect they'll have lots. The problem is, with the Retina display, there is also likely to be HUGE demand.

They are indeed reporting shortages on Retina displays,
according to some popular Mac sites.


I have a feeling there may be no preorders for iPad 3
if that is the case.

Rumors of higher price for RetinaDisplay. I don't believe it. Apple wants to get its price structure. And I'll be surprised if the 3G still has a $130 premium.
