I've been absorbing this info for the past 10 minutes. When I read Phong's post,it hit me like a lightning bolt. The biggest, silliest grin split my face. I read the press release out loud to my wife, who was on the phone with her mom about the P&S LoTR issue. As I read it to her, we high-fived and hooted and hollered.
We're a happy family.
***THANK YOU WARNER BROTHERS FOR LISTENING!***
Plese continue to do the right thing with Cats & Dogs, Lord of the Rings, and ALL new releases of any film in any category. The right thing is to offer OAR. If you feel that the addition of a MAR-format of the same film is a necessary marketing move, offer it as a parallel SKU (as with the new Wonka version) or as a supplement (as with the orginal Wonka DVD).
Pats on the backs to all of us, here and everywhere else, on and off the Internet, who made a difference and took the time to let Warner know what we wanted.
Despite all the harsh language over the past couple of weeks - which was strictly meant to motivate WB into supporting OAR on Wonka and other family titles - we all of us realize that this was AND STILL IS a great studio and a great champion of DVD. We know that from the recent article we saw on the origins of DVD. We also know it from the stand they are taking with Blockbuster Video. This proves it all over again.
We voted with our dollars (I'm sure they've seen the 1st run of the numbers on Goonies, eh?), and Warner did the right thing and answered our prayers. As someone else said, they are to be commended for NOT stubbornly sitting on the wrong decision. I'd like to shake their collective hands.
WB is giving us a great Wonka SE. MGM is set to deliver a great SE of Dressed To Kill next week. There are always dragons left to slay, but right now all feels safe in Camelot.
Thanks to everyone!

Wonderful!
I'm glad we convinced WB to see the light. I hope whoever made this MAR decision in the first place had to eat a little crow

.
My only concern is that the dates are so far apart (I know that it has to be manufactured, etc.) because some people might not know about this situation and buy the MAR not knowing a OAR is coming. I highly doubt Walmart, etc. will put up signs saying a OAR version is coming 11/13.
Thank god for the internet and HTF!!

The studios need to remember what a powerful tool the internet is. Remember when you used to only know release info when you walked into the store

Great job Warner! I was starting to worry about any future SE of "The Iron Giant". Man 2.35:1 panned and scanned to 4:3. NO!! But there is hope...

Wow! I never would have imagined a large corporation like Warner to act this quickly. Thanks for the announcement and the work on the petition Phong. Apparently 11,000 fans do matter to them. Lets hope they don't screw up again.

I was thinking about that.
How about it, Warner? Will you consider this:
Put a sticker on every FullScreen version hitting the streets next Tuesday (print the stickers and send them to the stores to stick 'em on there themselves, if the stuff is already en route).
The sticker should say:
Full Screen Version
Widescreen Version available
on November 13th, 2001

You know , I wouldn't be surprised if sales of The Goonies had something to do with this. They looked at thier sales figures, saw how this film was selling like friggen hotcakes in OAR only, and said "Man, I think these people are serious about this! We'd better get this done or were screwed!"
Warner it takes a big man, er studio to own up to a mistake. Even though I have little interest in this film, I will buy it just to say thanks!

This is FANTASTIC!!!! Now, it's just a matter of waiting till November. Now it's time to ask Warner Bros. for other worthy titles like THE DEVILS, the Hammer horror classics, O LUCKY MAN and HOUSE OF WAX to name a few. This made my night!

A round of applause goes to the lot of us, but particularly Phong, who worked the petition like a jockey on a recalcitrant horse, and Ron Epstein, for pushing the issue on the Forum.
I'm assuming ol' Ewa Martinoff is busy eating her liver right now.
Great News!
P.S. - While preordering this title might be the way to go as Best Buy and the other retailers aren't giving this much of a discount (the usual $19.95 on a $24.95 list title), one might want to be careful that they don't get saddled with the wrong version-- which tends to happen anytime these dual-version releases are put out.

I'd love to see the sales figures as to which copy does better. Hopefully Warner can go on THAT information rather than thier extensive research into "family viewing" on their future releases.
Good news all round.
