My brother has a problem with his computer that I was hoping somebody can help me with.

He was defragmenting his harddrive and it locked at 94% complete.

Ever since, when he tries to boot the computer, he gets a message "error loading user.exe" and the computer will not boot.

Any suggestions other than formatting and re-installing windows?

I'm a little rusty with 98, but can you press F8 at boot and get a "last known good configuration" boot option to try and fix it? Or can you get into safe mode and create a new user?
