    ABOUT THE FILMS

TCM GREATEST CLASSIC LEGENDS: JOHN FORD WESTERNS

Four classic westerns from four-time Academy Award® winning director, John Ford.

SHE WORE A YELLOW RIBBON (1949) - Academy Award® Winner - A masterpiece of mood and heroics directed by John Ford. An aging cavalry officer (John Wayne) who knows the agony of war on the desert frontier seeks to make his last mission one of peace.

THREE GODFATHERS (1948) - The tale of the Magi – Western style. Fugitive bank robbers John Wayne, Pedro Armendariz and Harry Carey Jr. won’t abandon the infant entrusted to them, even though caring for him dims their chances of escape.

CHEYENNE AUTUMN (1964) - A proud people abandon resettlement and head for their Yellowstonehomeland in Ford’s moving, epic last Western. Richard Widmark, Carroll Baker, Karl Malden and James Stewart head an all-star cast.

WAGON MASTER (1950) - A chronicle of a Mormon wagon train’s journey and one of Ford’s personal favorites among his works. Ben Johnson, Harry Carey Jr., Ward Bond and other familiar Ford faces take the reins in this glorious paean to the pioneer spirit. “Wagons west!”

TCM GREATEST CLASSIC LEGENDS: JEAN HARLOW

Among AFI’s “Top 25 Female Legends,” Jean Harlow will be featured as TCM Star of the Month in March 2011.

DINNER AT EIGHT (1933): You’re invited to a sparkling all-star peek into the lives of the troubled and troublemaking Who’s Who coming to a posh Manhattan party, led by Jean Harlow, Marie Dressler, John and Lionel Barrymore, Wallace Beery and more. George Cukor directs.

LIBELED LADY (1936): When society diva Myrna Loy sues newsman Spencer Tracy for libel, he enlists fiancée Harlow and buddy William Powell in a scheme involving a rigged marriage, a phony seduction, a funny fishing scene, fisticuffs and eventually, true love for all.

CHINA SEAS (1935): A rugged captain (Clark Gable) sails perilous waters with a fortune in British gold. That’s not the only risky cargo he carries. Both his fiery mistress (Harlow) and refined fiancée (Rosalind Russell) are aboard! Wallace Beery also stars.

WIFE VS. SECRETARY (1936): Businessman Clark Gable relies on secretary Harlow – too much according to wily wife Myrna Loy. James Stewart adds to the star-bright comedy/drama as Harlow’s beau.

TCM GREATEST CLASSIC LEGENDS: ERROL FLYNN

THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD (1938): Winner of three Academy Awards®. Dashing Errol Flynn triumphs in this lavish version of the Robin Hood saga. Olivia de Havilland (as Maid Marian), supreme villains Basil Rathbone and Claude Rains and a boisterous who’s who of character actors co-star. Welcome to Sherwood!

CAPTAIN BLOOD (1935): Flynn skyrocketed to stardom as a 17th-century physician turned pirate after escaping unjust political imprisonment. Radiant Olivia de Havilland co-stars in the first of their eight films together. Michael Curtiz directs.

THE SEA HAWK (1940): Cannons thunder, blades clatter and Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s dynamic music swirls as Flynn plays a seagoing rogue who commandeers a 40-gun galleon, endures captivity, then boldly escapes to warn England of Spain’s armada.

ADVENTURES OF DON JUAN (1948): Academy Award® winner. In this later-career swashbuckler, Flynn is a warmer, wittier version of his earlier characters as he rescues the Spanish queen (Viveca Lindfors) from the snares of an evil duke.

    TCM GREATEST CLASSIC FILMS: LASSIE

LASSIE COME HOME: In “one of the all-time great family films” (Leonard Maltin’s Movie Guide), a remarkable collie – sold by her poor family – braves storms, hunger and peril to return to her young master (Roddy McDowall). Donald Crisp, Dame May Whitty, Edmund Gwenn, Nigel Bruce, Elsa Lanchester and 11-year-old Elizabeth Taylor form a top supporting cast.

SON OF LASSIE: On a bombing run over enemy-occupied Norway, a bomber crewman (Peter Lawford) and his devoted dog, Lassie’s son Laddie, parachute from their damaged aircraft into a series of wartime adventures. June Lockhart (of TV’s Lassie series), Donald Crisp and Nigel Bruce also star.

COURAGE OF LASSIE: America’s favorite collie is in the Army now! The beloved canine’s new adventures range from his wilderness puppyhood and wartime battlefield service to postwar stress and a moving family reunion. Elizabeth Taylor, Frank Morgan and Tom Drake star.

HILLS OF HOME: FIRST TIME ON DVD! A Scottish doctor (Edmund Gwenn) rescues Lassie from a cruel master but nearly regrets his deed when he finds the dog has a phobia of water. But hearts and minds change in this warm and winning story that co-stars Donald Crisp, Janet Leigh and Tom Drake.

These are all previously released Jean Harlow films, which I'm sure most of her fans already own.

Are they going to release her unreleased films (Bombshell, Red Dust, Saratoga, etc;) fans have been requesting for several years now?

It would be great if Ron or someone here would please pose this question to them.

    Come on Warner!?!!

Warner set a release year during one of the recent chats (2011 or 2012...cant quite remember) Considering no Harlowe titles were added to the Warner Archive since the announcement (THE BEAST OF THE CITY remains the only Harlowe title there, though its really a Walter Huston film) its safe to assume the set is still in the works as a future TCM Spotlight

I hope that coincides with a major DVD announcement. She would have been 100 (!) on March 3, 2011,

I guess I'm getting concerned, because none of the historians, biographers & family who know Harlow best have been contacted by Warner to participate in anything (docs, commentaries, etc;).

Yes, I've spoken to nearly all of them and they haven't heard a peep from anyone in Burbank. Mark Vieira finally found a publisher for his Harlow centennial book (a joint venture with Harlow historian Darrell Rooney) in Los Angeles after it was rejected by several large NY publishers - including Abrams, who has published several of Mark's books. It certainly will look bad if all Warner offers us is a rehash of previously released material. I certainly hope this won't be the case.

    I'll keep my fingers crossed.

When I saw the title of the thread, I was overjoyed for Harlow fans that they were finally going to get some of her unreleased films on DVD only to find that these were reissues. I'm sorry that your wait will seemingly be a little longer. I'm not a big Harlow fan, but even I'd spring for a set that had Red Dust, Reckless, and Saratoga in it.
