Gregg, you piqued my curiosity, so I did a search on the 700 thread over on avs. (over 4000 replies in this thread)
There are some people who see sde, but most report that it is only visible when there is motion on the screen. More like a quick flash of peekaboo gridlines.
Others report seeing very faint sde, but not all the time.
By far, it appears that most people do not see sde at all.
I too have seen peekaboo gridlines on a couple dvd's. The Shrek and Toy Story dvd's seem to the worst. They are quick flashes and only appear on the image that is moving. If I pause the frame the image is totally smooth, no sde at all.
I think there is something wrong with your friends pj. Maybe the smoothscreen (not sure exactly how it works) is not functioning properly. If you get a chance, you should demo another unit and see if it's the same.
