I was looking for a movie to watch the other day and couldn't decide which one I wanted to watch so I went back to a favorite of mine, The Shawshank Redemption. It's kind of strange, I have over 400 discs but keep going back to a handful of them. Well it's obviously because they are my favorites, but I kinda wish I would be in the mood to watch some of the other titles more often, that way I wouldn't feel I've wasted money on them. Anyway, which movies do you find yourself going back to time and time again?

A few of mine:

The Thing
The Shawshank Redemption
Predator
Signs
Waterworld
The Road Warrior
Boogie Nights
Pulp Fiction

The one that I keep going back to repeatedly seems to be The Fellowship of the Ring. Between the original theatrical release and the extended edition, I've watched it well over 100 times. Others that come to mind are:

Signs
The 13th Warrior
The Family Man
Braveheart
The Matrix
Goonies
Stargate SG-1

Which DISC have I watched the most? Sadly, I went through such a rapid period of DVD acculumation (and later, selling off of the majority of the collection) that I haven't had time to watch any of them more than once, not including commentaries. No, correction... I watched Toy Story 2 twice because I showed it to my dad. Oh, and my girlfriend had the urge to watch Terminator 2 a while ago, so I've seen that one twice too.

As for which of the MOVIES in my collection have I watched most...

Airplane!
This is Spinal Tap
Pink Floyd: The Wall
Drugstore Cowboy
Harold & Maude
It's a Wonderful Life
The Wizard of Oz
A Clockwork Orange
The Shining
Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Young Frankenstein
Taxi Driver
Yellow Submarine
Blue Velvet
Lost in America
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Blazing Saddles
Die Hard
Alien
Fantasia
Glengarry Glen Ross
The Graduate
Halloween
Tapeheads

And now that I think about it, I think some of those I've only seen 3-4 times. Sigh... if only there were more hours in the day.

Fight Club
House On Haunted Hill (1999)
The Fellowship Of The Ring
Phenomena
Pitch Black
Ravenous
Run, Lola, Run
Saving Private Ryan
Soldier
Thir13en Ghosts
Virus

In other words, I return to the ones that have the most entertainment value. You'll also notice that many of those have killer soundtracks and equally cool visuals: not a coincidence...:D

I essentially cycle through my list in order, and since I have well over 600 films, I see each film less than once every two years. Except for those films I watch once a year on a certain day (or in the case of Xmas movies, in a certain month). So it would be one of those, which are:

Groundhog Day
Father of the Bride
The Long, Long Trailer
Father of the Bride, Part 2
It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown
Hocus Pocus
Young Frankenstein
Planes, Trains & Automobiles
The Year Without a Santa Claus
Scrooge
A Charlie Brown Christmas
The Bishop's Wife
It's a Wonderful Life
Frosty the Snowman
A Christmas Story
Miracle on 34th Street
Mickey's Christmas Carol
Jingle All the Way
How the Grinch Stole Christmas! (animated)
Scrooged
Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer
National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation
Santa Claus is Coming to Town
Home Alone
Home Alone 2
When Harry Met Sally

I would say I find myself coming back to many of the same titles myself. Much depends on my mood. As my friend SteveGon can attest, I often have movies he lets me borrow for weeks. I just need to be in the right frame of mind, or else I know I will not enjoy them. Especially the kind he has.:)

But, the ones I find myself able to put in just about anytime are:

The Princess Bride Big surprise here eh?

Suicide Kings Part drama, romance, and comedy- this one never fails to deliver

The Big Lebowski I've probably watched this DVD more than any in my collection

Labyrinth Along with Bride, a movie I have managed to memorize almost completely

There are many others that I watch often, but these four are the ones I can put in if nothing else sounds good.

Great question.
The movie that has seen the player more than any is Waterworld.

Movies that come a close second....
Tommy Boy
Dumb & Dumber
Starship Troopers(just ordered the SE,yay)
Office Space
Men in Black
MST3K:The Movie
A trilogy that I can't mention.

Like Chuck, between what I buy and Netflix I always have unwatched discs so it's pretty rare that I watch something again, most often it's a musical that I put on while I'm working from home or something holiday related, plus my Mom wants to watch Oh Brother Where Art Thou? practically every time she visits:

It's A Wonderful Life
Oh Brother Where Art Thou?
42nd Street
Hedwig And The Angry Inch
Guys And Dolls
Suspiria
Night of the Hunter
My Fair Lady
The Passion of Joan of Arc
Days of Heaven

Especially the kind he has.
What? :D

As with Brook and Chuck, I've got so many damn DVDs that I've probably got 30-40 unwatched movies in my collection. And I keep buying more! Arrggghhhh!!!!!

Anyway, The Third Man, Paths of Glory, and Sullivan's Travels are probably my most-watched discs. :)

What!? No Dumbo? Color me shocked! :)

For myself, The Kubrick rotation:
Dr. Strangelove
2001: A Space Odyssey
A Clockwork Orange

(also)

The Matrix
Princess Mononoke
The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly - Holds up remarkably well. ( My first or second favorite Western - see below. )
A Knight's Tale :b ( One of my guilty pleasures )
The Fifth Element - heavy demo rotation for the projector.
Last of the Mohicans - even though the new dialog at the finale sucks eggs.
Se7en
Chariots of Fire - despite the horrific composition of the open matte, zoomed Region 1 abomination from Warner Bros., it remains my favorite film. ( I really need to break down and import a better copy of this film. )
The English Patient - Another favorite that has slowed down in terms of rotation over the last 2 years.
James Taylor: Live at the Beacon Theater - One of the earlier concerts on DVD, and still one of the best out there.

On LD:

Microcosmos - My best laserdisc video demo, and a damn entertaining film.
Stormy Weather - One of my favorite musicals primarily for Cab Calloway and Fats Waller.
Mildred Pierce - Can retire the LD now that there is a lovely DVD of this film.
Once Upon A Time In The West - One of my all time favorite films and my other "favorite" Western. Really hope that Paramount does a bang-up job on this title.

- Walter.
