When do I know it is a good idea to pre-wire for 6.1/7.1?

    Can 6.1 or 7.1 speakers be in-ceiling or is the back wall a better way to do it? My future HT back wall is about 11' from the viewing area.

    Also, my 5.1 pre-wire is going to have both speakers about 5' from the floor and the left rear is going to be slightly off axis due to a window. Is that ok?

    You want to stay as close to the ideal as you can given typical room contraints. For example, I do think you want your rears to be quite a way behind you whether they are in the ceiling or in the rear wall.

    Thanks Tim. I think I am leaning towards the two rears being 4' behind the viewing area and pointing at a slight angle towards the couch. IF this sounds completely off, please let me know otherwise.
