What's the biggest DVD binge you ever did, in one shot, one day? (1 Viewer)

Here in portland, starting Tuesday, our city pretty much got completely iced in. Snow, then freezing rain, then regular rain which just froze to the top of the mess. It wasn't until about Friday that they finally started clearing the streets out. So on Sunday, after being totally afflicted with Cabin Fever for 4 days, me and my girl took advantage of the cleared out roads and finished the last day of christmas. We had a bunch of gift certificates to various retailers (BB/Blockbuster/Suncoast) that we hadn't spent at all, so we decided to binge. We ended up bringing home another DVD stand/container/case/rickety piece of pressboard garbage and these movies

this is what I THINK we picked up. It's hard to remember, that's a lot of DVD's.

That's 21 DVD's in one day. I've NEVER COME CLOSE to that before in my life. But I'm nowhere near as hardcore as some of you guys up here--I'm sure SOMEONE's topped it. So that's my question: What's the BIGGEST binge you ever went on? 5? 7? my previous was, I think, 9, and that was LAST Christmas.


Also, in addition to our exploits, my friend came up and gave us late christmas presents. we got:

Miller's Crossing
A Midsummer Nights Dream

and I bought

The Princess Bride

a couple days before that. So that's 24 DVD's in the space of like, 3 days.My collection is almost at 200 now, I think. I dunno. I don't know what the hell I'm going to do with them all

Anyone who's been on the LA trip and visited the Fox studio store (really the employee store, as they have no public tours) probably have some scary binges. I think I bought 10-12 titles, and I was a light hitter.

I recall Aaron Silverman bought an entire library during the trip in 2001

Mine would have been 2 higher if I could have found Spirited Away and Bridge on the River Kwai anywhere. But no.

Still tho, I'm getting that post Binge worry going on. I mean--did I really need to buy THAT MANY? Wow. I can't imagine 10-12 being a LIGHT day..

Eh, my best for a day has been six dvds on two separate occasions this month. I grabbed a couple Criterion DVDs that I absolutly adored and just had to get more of them. Managed to snag the last Hitchcock boxset from my local Borders and Schizopolis this weekend. I've already bought 12 dvds this month so far, and I'm not even half way through. I fear for my wallet

Last night I considered ordering all seven seasons of Star Trek Deep Space Nine. And then, seeing that it would run me almost $700, I reconsidered it. I ordered only season 1 and I'll order season 2 in about a month after I finish watching that.

Every Fall I place a preorder for about $500 worth of DVDs that will be coming out over the next few months leading up to Christmas. Then in the Winter I have a bit of a fast on DVDs, in part because there's usually a corresponding lull in new releases and in part to recover from holiday spending.

Most I've done in one day was three. Using birthday money back in September, I got Terminator SE, T2 Extreme, and Sleepless in Seattle in one go from Target. (I also got The Mask of Zorro SE later from the same birthday money cash pool.)

Other than that, I've gotten two at once on a couple occasions. On December 16, 2002, I picked up both Back to the Future Trilogy and Minority Report on the same day (this would probably qualify as the most money I've spent at once.) February 11, 2003 saw both X-Men 1.5 and My Big Fat Greek Wedding enter my collection. I also recently picked up both Fantasia and Fantasia 2000 in one go before they disappear at the end of the month.

I think probably about $300 in one trip it my record. But, generally a big trip is about $100 or so.

I personally love it when Hastings has a buy 2 get 1 free sale on their previously viewed DVDs. You can usually go home with 10-15 titles for about $100.

I don't remember the date, but I remember getting 2 seasons of stargate sg-1, a season of Friends, and a few assorted movies in 1 day, cam eto like 250 bucks....
Never again I said..... Never again....

Before I changed my buying habits I'd usually spend all day Saturday hitting the flea markets, pawn shops, and used stores. Often I'd buy 15-25 discs in a day.

Here's a sad story: Robert, do you know Home Video Library way out on SE Division St? They used to rent DVDs and sell a few used ones. I used to go in there all the time, but then I had waited a couple of months before going back. Well, when I finally did go, I discovered that they were getting out of the renting business and selling off all their rental DVDs dirt cheap! Unfortunately, the vultures had already picked the place clean by the time I got there. I did manage to snag about 10 titles that day, but I know they had a ton of stuff I would have bought, including almost every Criterion.

Normaly I have one shipment each month of about €300, not counting the odd R2 title I pick up when shopping here in Belgium.

Martin: DAMN! When did they do that? I lived out that way for the first 2 years since moving up from Eugene. had an apartment on 162nd and Stark and then an apartment on Powell and 181st. I wish I'd known, I would have vultured my ass right up in there. I thought that place was just home video EQUIPMENT, not rental. I'm kicking myself now.

Usually my purchases end up being 2 at a times on Best Buy new release days, or 2 for 20/3 for 30 Used DVD deals at Hollywood. Those aren't very often, tho.

When BlowOut Video (its a not a porn shop, regular movies) went out of business they had a 50% off sale, I spend like 180, something like 19 DVDs.

My wife and I saved for almost five years to take a one month vacation/marriage/honeymoon trip to Australia in 2001. During that time, our DVD purchases were limited to the "must haves" only. We did not hold back on our spending while we were there, but we did tell ourselves that whatever was leftover from the trip we would use for a huge DVD spree when we got home.

Two and a half hand-carts full later, we blew over $3000 Canadian on DVDs at Futureshop in one day. Due to our volume purchase, they knocked $2 off each title MANUALLY. Anyone who's been to or is/has worked at Futureshop knows that if there is a price adjustment at the cash, they need to enter a password for each price adjustment. Needless to say, the "password" guy closed a cash for us and spent a half hour ringing us up.

Since that day, the staff refer to me as "quota man". We single-handedly made and exceeded their department quota for the week.

I was cursing myself for missing out on all the good stuff. These days I wouldn't care so much since I hardly buy anything, but back then it was a big deal to me.

I don't know if you're aware of these places, but you can find lots of used discs here, cheaper than most places:

A-1 Hawk (180-somethingth and Stark, 122nd and Division, one down in Milwaukee somewhere)
CD/Game Exchange (bunch of locations all over)
Everyday Music (downtown, Beaverton, 20th & Sandy)
flea markets (weekends only 192nd & Stark, 122nd just off Sandy)

Those are the best options in town, IMO.
