I can't remember what possesed me to write to one of my favorite stars for an autograph, or even how I got the address, but around 1996, I got my first return autograph of Dan Akroyd. That got me hooked on this fun/cool hobby.
Over the past 6 years, I have about 50 autographs in my collection. I keep the real ones, usually ditch the obvious preprints unless it's a cool photo they sent back.
However, after going to a total of about 5 Trek cons in the past 7 years, most ofmy auto's are of Trek Stars. I've got all but one of the Captains. Have Brooks, Mulgrew, Shatner, and Stewarts, missing Bakula(Well, I have a small post card size one of him, but can't tell if it's authentic or not. Waiting for a chance for an in person one).
I also have 7 of the main Voyager crew, 10 main DS9 members, 6 TNG members and 7 TOS members, including a personalized Deforest Kelly.
As far as non Trek stars go, half of my collection is dedicated to them so far. I have Bob Barker, Gilbert Godfried, John Astin(Original Gomez obtained in person), David Prowse(In Person), Tim Allen, Peter Mayhew(In Person), Ed Kotch, Gallagher, a real nice one from John Ritter with a personalized message, along with Daniel Stern(Home Alone), Robin Williams, Calvert Deforest(Late Show), David Letterman, Joe Pescie, Matt Groening(In Person), Jim Varney(Personalized), Adam West(In Person), Phil Brown(Original Uncle Owen in person), Ed Oneil and Chevy Chase(probably pre-prints) Katey Segal(Personalized), Jaleel White, MarkHamil(Probably pre-print, but accidentally sent two :) ), Dean Stockwell(Personalized) and last, but not least David Hasselhoff.
I'm currently going to try some new stars to see how successfull I am. James Earl Jones, Carrie Fisher, Natellie Portman, Ewan McGregor, Bill Murray, Frank Oz, Mike Meyers, and Alan Kalter(Late Show Announcer).
Question though. I read that I'd have better luck with Bill Murray, if I sent it to a movie he's currently filming. Anyone know if he has any on the roster that he's currently doing?
Interested in hering what's in your collection!

A few country music legends over the years. I get them to sign rare albums usually. Jerry Lee Lewis signed his first Sun album. Ernest Tubb. George Jones signed his Bob Wills tribute LP. Red River Dave. Merle Haggard signed an obscure 45.

Only one, Cher, signed "to Steve, with love, Cher". It was gotten for me by the treasurer of the Sonny & Cher fan club during a dinner she had with them when they came to do a show in Sacramento in 1964.

I have a few...
George Foreman, Hulk Hogan, Mick Foley, Stonecold Steve Austin, Jim Kelly, Andre Reed, John Travolta, Bob Dole, Billy Joel, the cast of Beverly Hills 90210 to name a few... I prefer pictures with people, I try hard to get those autographed. I have pictures of me and the Rock together that I desparately want to get autographed, but he is so big now it is damn near impossible:frowning:

I have some autographed movie posters in my living room, which can be seen in post 31 of this thread. I also have a personalized autograph on a poster from Edward James Olmos. My biggest wish is to have my Chasing Amy Vogue review one-sheet signed by Kevin Smith, but I missed that opportunity twice now. Also in the wish pile would be one-sheets autographed by Cameron Crowe and Robert Zemeckis.
I have a few Trek autographs as well, from Walter Koenig, George Takei, John DeLancie, Marina Sirtis, Wil Wheaton and Rene Auberjonois.
From the "weird-stuff-that-happened-in-college" pile, I have Barry "Greg Brady" Williams, Rhonda Shear and Jay Mohr, as well as a few other names that may or may not sound familiar.
I have two autographed books. I met John Pierson at the Florida Film Festival in 1997 and he signed his book "Spike, Mike, Slackers and Dykes." If you are interested in independent film and don't know Pierson's name, by all means, get this book! And recently, Bruce Campbell did a book tour signing his autobiography "If Chins Could Kill." Very nice guy.
In music, I have a couple cherished autographs. I had an LA band called The Muffs sign their LP "Blonder and Blonder" when I met them in Atlanta. The record store I worked at in Orlando had two of the same album slick autographed by XTC c. 1989, so I convinced them to let me have one. I waited outside the theater a couple years back and got to go in and get an autograph from "Weird Al" Yankovic. And most recently, I saw Tenacious D in Orlando and got to briefly meet them after the show. They signed a promo CD for "Tribute." Sweet.
All of these, except for the Fargo poster signed by William H. Macy and the XTC album slick were obtained in person.
Neil, sounds like you have been to a couple comic/sci-fi conventions, as I have. Did Matt Groening apppear at a convention to sign autographs?
Question though. I read that I'd have better luck with Bill Murray, if I sent it to a movie he's currently filming. Anyone know if he has any on the roster that he's currently doing?
Go to a library or bookstore where you can see the current issues of the Hollywood Reporter or Variety. They list movies in production in there, with the major stars that are attached as well as the start of production. They probably will even have an address for the production office, which might be where you would send the autograph request.

I met Vincent Price at a speaking engagement and got him to sign a bunch of stuff, none of which will ever see eBay--including inscribing the classic poster for The Abominable Dr Phibes with my favorite line "You can't kill me, doctor--I am already dead."

Other gems include H.P. Lovecraft's signature in a book from his library.

Harlan Ellison signed, he said for the one and only time, a video of City on the Edge of Forever, at a charity auction that I won. :D
