I understand exactly what your commenting about and it is a strong point in today's society. Interestingly enough in my behavioral science and leadership class we went over something like those. We were talking about how people, especially in today's society, want to blame the external factors and not take any of the blame themselves. Sometimes external factors do play a major role, but many of the times a part of, if not, a large part of blame falls on the individual involved. When we consider the FDA we see something very similar. People rely on the FDA, and other regulatory systems to protect them from the "evils of the free market". Then when something does slip through everyone quickly goes to blame the corporation as evil because they are poisoning people or theres a part that could be a chocking hazard for kids. Nobody seems to want to take on the responsibility of doing research of the products they buy and/or eat nor do they want to have to consider if a small piece could break off and be eat-tin by their child.
In the absence of the FDA there would not be a ramp up in poising by companies. What would happen is private companies would rise up and fill the void of the FDA and the average Joe would be required to do a bit more research on the internet or in books then he is use to. No matter what way you look at it, the average Joe has part of the blame for buying and using hazardous products. Lots of information on how teas are made and whats really in the bags was available before those videos, but major awareness didn't start until after the video, well in theory anyway. More people could have known about it already than we think. Anyway, the false sense security is what people hide behind when they find out about something bad about a product they use, when in reality they are still the one who bought the product without questioning anything. We could get into all the things that the FDA says is safe that are very dangerous for your health as well, but a bit of research prevents you from blindly buying those products as well.
Remember, companies are after profits and as long as you give them those profits you positively reinforce the behavior. If everyone stops buying a product because it is considered hazardous, the product disappears and the company could go with it if their image is hurt bad enough. If you believe a product is bad for any reason, don't buy it.
