A number of factors contributed to the poor look and sound of many films from the 1970's.
  • The final demise of the studio system, and the switch to location rather than studio filming.
  • The use of natural light rather than controlled studio lighting.
  • The demise of dye-transfer Technicolor, superceeded by the then chemically unstable fast fading eastman color.
  • The new generation of film makers who were influenced by poorly filmed french movies masquarading as art.
  • The aquisition of the studios by large multi-national corporations concerned only about the bottom line.

Umm, what?

Anyway, I think some of the films mentioned in this thread look great. Personally, I never really cared for the artificial polish of the Hollywood films of the 50s and 60s.

Unfortunately, Armand, that's copyrighted material you've copied and pasted here. Also unfortunately, if you link to the Times site, the link will only be good for a day or two. But please remove the editorial (which is in the Calendar section, not the Op/Ed page) and provide a link. Thanks.
No, it was in the OP/ED page. I would have put the link in but it was one of those where you have to register to get in. It's free, so it will probably be in the online edition for the rest of this week. It may be copyrighted material, but they usually don't mind if proper credit is given. But, to avoid any problems...
