For me, there are two things that scare the shit out of me:
1) Being wrongly convicted of Murder! - not only do you have to spend years of your life in a hellish pit, but when you get ouy, you are worth nothing - you are the lowest order of society - your life is RUINED and it isn't your fault!
2) Dying in a pete bog! (not so scared of this now, but was petrified of this as a little kid) -it sprung from seeing a particularly gruesome version of Sherlock Holmes' "Hound of the Baskervilles".
What (unorthodox) things are you guys scared of?

Hitting a child with my car. Nothing scares me to death like driving past a park and there is alot of kids playing. I can just see one of them dashing out from between two parked cars...I can't think of anything more awful than that.

Floating away. I understand centrifugal force, but not gravity. Usually I stay close to trees so I'll have something to grab on.

Please keep in mind that I have no idea what I'm talking about and am only allowed off "D" WARD for 3 hours at a time to volunteer in the Medical Library.

Fear mongering. I used to watch a few shows like Crossfire on CNN, now there is nothing but continual "Scare TV" 24/7.
First the "Terrorist Experts" tell what can happen to you, then they tell you there’s nothing you can do about it. That seems to be total extent of the knowledge these "Experts" have!
My answer is: Fear and Ignorance

I'm generally along the same lines as Eric.
Ignorance
Intolerance
Close-Mindedness
Incompetence, particularly in areas of power and authority.
In general, the commitment to deny and avoid reality.

Losing my kids through:
Divorce
Accident
Foul play
Or them being tormented by pain and them either being alone, with some heinous person hurting them, or them just not understanding why I can't make it go away.
I have nightmares about them hurting and calling for me and me not being able to get to them.
Thanks for bringing that phobia back to the forefront of my mind.

Some of Eric Scott's posts scare the panties off me really, recently I was reading one of his more lengthy detailed posts and I ended up hiding behind Sandra's bra, and she was still wearing it!
No the last time I screamed in horror was when I stumbled out of bed this morning and looked in the bathroom mirror, hair all mussed up, bleary eyed, unshaven, I looked like night of the living dead.
No like I've posted many times before, spiders scare the crap out of me, too alien too creepy, strangely enough I enjoy watching the movie Arachnophobia and I naturally identify with Jeff Daniels character in the film.

Any of you guys got a cute sister?

He thought on homeland, the big timber, the air thin and chill all the year long. Tulip poplars so big through the trunk they put you in mind of locomotives set on end. He thought of getting home and building him a cabin on Cold Mountain so high that not a soul but the nighthawks passing across the clouds in autumn could hear his sad cry. Of living a life so quiet he would not need ears. And if Ada would go with him, there might be the hope, so far off in the distance he did not even really see it, that in time his despair might be honed off to a point so fine and thin that it would be nearly the same as vanishing.

Becoming insane, because then some of my worst fears could actually come true: Does it really matter whether or not GIANT ROACHES exist if I can actually see one?
Everything in this thread could become a madman's reality.
