A light week for me, but I am all over "The Palm Beach Story". You can never have too much Preston Sturges in your collection, and the price is right. I may go for "Chariots of Fire" as well.
Target is also selling the Philips 642 DVD player for $59.99. The main selling point for this DVD player is that it can be easily hacked for region free play (by opening the tray, and entering 7-8-9-OK-0 from the remote control), can do PAL->NTSC conversion, and it'll play XVid files, and Mpeg-1, Mpeg-2, Mpeg-4, etc, files without the need to re-encode them for DVD/VCD/SVCD. The video playback quality isn't the greatest, but for a second utility DVD player, it's not bad, and for $60, it's a steal.
Well all my buying is kinda on hold, I got a job at Hollywood Video today and was told by a friend that I'll be getting 20% off so I may wait and buy these for cheap used.
Target has quite a few new releases that are not advertised: Bodyguard $14.99 Oz $49.99 I Love Lucy $44.99 Frasier $32.99 Cheers $32.99 Wonderfalls $29.99 Blue Lagoon/Return to B.L. $14.99 Brak $22.99 Sea Lab $22.99
I picked up Lucy, and Netflix is shipping The Grudge today. Looks like a busy weekend ahead!
Wal-Mart did have Wonderfalls, but for $29.99 (about the lowest B&M price from what I've gathered). I almost didn't find it because the coverart doesn't quite make it easy to find (for me, at least). Of course, the more I look at it, the more it makes sense, but still, not easily to find amidst the rest of the new releases this week.
Went to CC about an hour after they had opened and they only had two copies of both The Grudge and Ray left. Picked up the last widescreen of Ray as well as The Grudge but for some strange reason the guy told me they never got Wonderfalls. Went to BB and Wal-Mart and neither had it either.
Darn it, Patrick...I wanted to be the one to help you out. My Wal-Mart had Wonderfalls for $29.96. Curiously, it took me about three scans of the racks before I found it. Bad coverart...but it was also partially obscured by the sale tag of the title placed just above it in the rack.
Anyway, here are some of the prices listed tonight at my local Wal-Mart (East Greenbush, NY):
She Hate Me $19.44 WonderFalls $29.96 Taxi S2 $29.96 Ray $15.87 Balto III $14.84 Shall We Dance (2004) $17.87 Mulan II $17.87 Grudge $15.87 Oz S4 $48.63 I Love Lucy S3 $44.84 Charmed S1 $29.99 Karate Kid Box $23.74 Look Who's Talking Box $23.74 Sealab 2021 S2 $21.84 Brak Vol. 1 $21.84 Chariots of Fire $19.94 (!) Cheers S4 $29.96 Carolina $19.86 Penn & Teller BS S2 $29.96 Frasier S4 $29.96 Bodyguard SE $13.72 Mr. 3000 $19.96 Vanity Fair $19.94
Two notes of interest. This Wal-Mart, which is usually quite good about stocking plenty of WS whenever there is a dual release, only had FF copies of Sky Captain. Maybe (and I'm giving the benefit of the doubt here), Sky Captain fans snatched up all the WS copies upon its release.
And, I easily price-matched at W-M the Target price on Chariots of Fire ($15.99)!
Local BB had Penn & Teller in stock (which seems like it might be somewhat rare), but it was priced $31.99. Amazingly, the good looking sales clerk at the front took my word for it and rang priced it down to the $24.99 I told her that the web site said. Odd since BB doesn't generally price match their own web site, and she completely trusted what I said.
The one target I stopped by didn't have miracle in, so I'll have to try another one.
For anyone considering purchasing the new Look Who's Talking set, please be aware that all three films are full-frame. The outer packaging does not state this. I took a look at the first film, and I am pretty sure that it's pan & scan as opposed to open-matte. Highly unfortunate.
Was their price $20? It might have been a "match + 10% of the difference" deal. 50 cents is 10% of $5. (I just knew that engineering degree would come in handy someday! )
Keep in mind that Xvid playback is pretty suspect. There's like a checkerboard effect over the screen, and overall quality is barely VHS, when these same files look DVD quality on my computer. Buyer Beyware. Sure, they play xvid/divx, but that's about it. Also, if I didn't know better, this model is nearly exactly the same as one of the Apex models that I used to own, only with new features. DVD quality is not as good as the cheap Philips 726 that just went out on me.
