Is there any reason I shouldn't use lightweight vinyl spackle on new drywall, to fill the screw heads? We just drywalled my daughter's basement ceiling, and she is still looking for a drywall finisher. In the meantime, I wanted to do the screw heads tomorrow, in 1 trip.

I know that drywall mud is normally used, but I like the fact that the spackle dries in about 30 minutes, and I can do both coats tomorrow.

    Thanks.

I think you would be OK for covering the screw heads since its not a place where you would be taping and its a pretty small area.

Thanks. A guy at Home Depot told me not to use spackle because it may show rust stains from the screws. Does that make any sense?

Depends if the nails you used will rust.

    Oh, you used screws.

    Deck screws?(those don't rust)

IF so...spackle away. If anything else(that will rust)...cover with 2 coats of primer and redo the spackle in 3-4 years(or whenever rust shows up).

Oh well. I decided against doing it. She'll have to wait until she finds a finisher or does it herself.
