I suspect the reason for this may be that The Interpreter is not an in-house title (it's actually part of the distribution agreement between Uni and Working Title/Studio Canal), so Uni may have only been provided with MPEG-4 materials.
At AVS, Amir stated that this title was encoded long, long ago and juts held back for release. Just Like Paramount experimented with AVC for "U2: Rattle and Hum" and then switched to VC-1, Universal did that with this title.
So, this does not indicate any new direction for Universal's codec choice.
