Guys ... Some good news ... after a lot of "medical tests .... bloodwork ... etc ..." ... our worst fear ended up not happening. Our oldest is a type one diabetic, and has been since he was 8. He is 24 now, and was having a lot of issues. This young man is what most would call a health nut. For about a month, he was exhibiting symptoms commonly scene in early MS. After extensive tests, this came back negative. He met with the specialist today, and it ended up requiring a switch in insulin. MAJOR relief.

Our other son's issues are being treated, and he has shown great improvement.

Dave and I are going to talk in Mid April, and hopefully, soon, we will be back on track.

Thanks again to all.

That's great news Craig.

Hi guys ... You may have noticed it's been about 6 weeks since the last post. Our youngest never quite cleared the challenges he was having. Since my last post, he was in a serious accident on campus that resulted in a broken neck in two vertebrae. The medical staff was stellar - they stabilized him and got him to the proper trauma center.

Surgery at the trauma was successful, and yesterday, he arrived "almost home". He is at a facility about 15 minutes from home, and started rehab today.

To tell this entire story would require several pages of posts. The gratitude towards God and the medical staff cannot be conveyed with mere words.

If he is willing, and ready to work to this end, a full recovery is doable. Dad will be there, every step of the way. This is not out of virtue or self importance. It is just ... natural and right. The recovery goes well beyond the physical. Being there is an unstoppable personal call.

As for this hobby and the "forum world", Time here, at least for the next few months, will be difficult.

Dave - as stated before, you have been a gracious host. Please call my office if you want to catch up.

For everyone else, thank you for all the kind words over the years ... and even the unkind words.

Craig:

We'll see you on the flip side...after you're done taking care of the important business.

Great to hear your son is doing well!

The flip side is here ... and time for an update. Our son's rehab has gone better than we thought possible. He is walking, working out, and has returned to college. He even joined a fraternity, which has done wonders for his self esteem.

We have much to be thankful for this year. And it feels good to be back.

Maybe we can do some more subwoofer tests this winter. I have an email into Dave to discuss.

Hi guys - We are back into the next round of reviews - this time it will be subwoofers in the $2000-$2500 range.

I already have an Axiom EP800 subwoofer here, and have on order a Powersound Audio V3601.

There will be more elaboration on this in a separate thread - over the holiday season, I took the EP800 to a high end audio store that carries JL subs. We did a comparison (blind) to an F212 V2. The EP800 was preferred by everyone there for overall sound quality, with the F212 winning the "cool factor".

The F212 looks as if it was made of a monolith of piano gloss black granite. It's just plain beautiful. The EP800 is handsome, but not as good looking.

Sound quality, on the other hand, is stellar with the EP800. Our large theater room is experiencing some SERIOUS shaking that none of the $1000 subs can match. Of course, for about $2300 from the "Outlet Store" (hint, if you pay full retail for an Axiom product, you paid too much), it should be a better sub.

I am pretty sure other subs in the $2000-$2500 range will have more output than an EP800, so it will be interesting to contrast the real world performance of the V3601 when it arrives in February.

Are you going to start a new $2000 to $2500 thread, Craig?

I'd say that would be the best way to go since this one is specifically designed for the "Under $1k" crew. I bet a lot of people read through this thread as they are looking at purchasing that first big sub.

If so, you should also include a link here to the new thread.

Mike - There will definitely be a new thread for the $2000-$2500 subwoofer packages. Good call on the link, too - when the thread opens I will post a link in a new post and also in the opening post of this thread.

I just wanted to thank you for doing this thread. It's awesome. I cant afford most of these subs lol even though i know that in the home audio world these are actually cheap. I started with a 5.1 onkyo audio system that included a 10" downfiring sub. I thought it sounded good then got a Paradigm PDR-10 to replace it. Which I got for around 320 new. And the difference was incredible. I can't imagine what these subs you test sound like compaired to my old cheap paradigm. Some day I hope to buy something a little nicer and closer to the 700 dollar range. So thank you for taking all the time you do to share with us what you find and your opinions. I really enjoy reading them. Keep up the good work.

Jeffrey:

Welcome to the HTF. :welcome:

We hope you'll stick around and join in the fun here.

Like you, I made my way up the subwoofer ladder. My first was a rinky-dink Jensen sub that came with my first 5.1 package of Jensen speakers I bought at Circuit City in the '90s. From there I bought a modded Sony SA-WM40 sub which lasted me a very long time.

And then finally...a few years ago...I bought an SVS PB-1000 (just $500 at SVS.com). It was a HUGE step up in quality and bass.

Am I done? Maybe. But I could see me going even bigger someday...although for my needs I doubt it is really necessary. But such is the lure of the hobby.

All the best to you!

Jeffrey - Welcome to Home Theater Forum. Your post explains EXACTLY why we are doing the subwoofer testing being done here. Most subwoofer threads contain a lot of talk about monster subwoofers, 10 Hz bass ... etc .. etc ... etc ...

But finding information for a guy who has a particular budget and wants good, flat, deep bass that adds to his home's music and movie experience is hard to find.

We are going to explore a lot over the next year - including how simple it is for "every man" to get good sound on a reasonable budget.

And speaking of budget - All of the subs from this test are here, and available for purchase at some spectacular prices. If anyone is interested, please PM me.

The only "bad" part is shipping on some of these - local pickup is preferred, but we will do everything we can to help.

We are about 90 minutes from Cleveland, Buffalo and Pittsburgh - anyone in those cities can easily arrange to meet for pick up.

thanks for the reply. Actually my Paradigm PDR-10 crapped the bed, the foam is going. I've been doing alot of research and I keep landing on the SVS-SB1000 mostly i listen to music and my room is in the small to medium range. How do you like your pb-1000 and what are your thoughts on it
