Twilight Time September/October 2012 Releases (1 Viewer)

Ever notice that TT is great at promoting their titles but when it comes to problems and issues like lack of extras, the SAE server going down for their absurd first 100 gets a signed copy ( which to me is highly unfair) , transfer issues, suddenly "its not their fault"
When someone says "we love the transfer" they bask in the glory, but if its sub-par we get "oh we got this from Fox or Sony, its not us"
Just an observation

I believe that they have been extremely upfront about all the issues you mentioned. To me the most important issue is the quality of the transfer. . Moving forward if a transfer is not up to snuff they will simply not release it.

Regarding Those Magnificent Men:
I found this little piece that I remembered from back in the days of the Patton release that also has a film poster of Those Magnificent Men:
http://www.imagesystems.se/case-studies/htv-illuminate-case-study.aspx
What alerted me was this sentence:
"The [Digital Vsision] Film Master has been a critical tool in the restoration of titles including; “Patton” (1970), “The Agony and the Ecstasy (1965), and “The Arrival (1996)."
Both The Arrival and Patton have a picture quality that can be said to be generally not well liked by enthusiasts to put it mildly.
And here is another article I found:
http://www.studiodaily.com/2009/07/two-digital-restorations-at-htvilluminate-the-agony-and-the-ecstasy-and-those-magnificent-men-in-their-flying-machines/
2k scans from a 65mm interpositive by the company who works with the software that brought us Patton?
Allow me to remain sceptical that this will look good!
Edit: And there is more:
"According to DI artist Mark Nowicki, this hardware/software solution allows the company to use advanced processing to remove grain and dust [...]"
No idea how correct this quote is but I do believe that whoever thinks that he needs to remove grain from film as a standard procedure should better not be let near film elements.

Doesn't sound so good, let's hope the quote is just telling us what they can do and not what they will do.

Hopefully! As I am sure some will be tempted to blindly buy I thought I'd better point that out.
Might be that all turned out fine but a 2k workflow from 65mm elements with possible DVNR close to what was done on Patton does not sound too tempting at first glance so it is buyer beware until we have some reviews from trusted reviewers.

I watched my 'Night Of The Living Dead' dvd last night, and I'm all for an upgrade now. Tom Savini crafted a very good remake, and although its been well over 10 years since I watched it, I forgot how creepy the zombies are in this one. Much more than Romero's original 'Dead' trilogy zombies.
I love the cast of main characters. Tony Todd, and Patricia Tallman do a wonderful job.

To answer 'Robin9' THE SOUND AND THE FURY is a very interesting film adaptation of a William Faulkner novel which was apparently very difficult to adapt for the screen. In recent years it has been screened on The Fox Movie Channel in (cropped) 1.85:1 and- just last year- on TCM in full 2.35:1. The cast is great. It is one of the few films Yul Brynner has made sporting hair, Margaret Leighton is terrific in a role not unlike Blanche DuBois in A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE and Joanne Woodward is excellent as always. The CinemaScope cinematography (mostly on location, though the Southern mansion is the one on the Fox backlot used frequently in movies such as THE LONG HOT SUMMER and HUSH..HUSH SWEET CHARLOTTE) by Charles G.Clarke is superb. (Often overlooked today, he was one of Fox's most proficient cameramen and shot such great 'Scope films as CAROUSEL, NIGHT PEOPLE and VIOLENT SATURDAY). Best of all, it has one of Alex North's greatest scores, released a few years back on CD and well worth seeking out. A restored print on Blu Ray in stereo will be worth any movie buff''s time and $. I'm hoping Twilight will release THE STRIPPER, a little seen CinemaScope film starring Joanne Woodward based on a William Inge play. FSM released the Jerry Goldsmith score not too long ago so there is a possibility that Twilight may get around to it. BTW, according to the imdb, KIrk Douglas was first offered the Yul Brynner role, Margaret Leighton replaced Lana Turner and Ethel Waters gave her final screen performance in the film. The title comes from a line in Shakespeare's MACBETH.

Thank you. I'll order this BRD.
By the way, I share your high opinion of Joanne Woodward and I'd be interested in a BRD of The Stripper which I saw when I was in my teens! (Is this film also known as A Woman Of Summer?)

Hi Robin9. Yes, THE STRIPPER was known as A WOMAN OF SUMMER in the United Kingdom. It was based on a play called A LOSS OF ROSES by William Inge which did well critically in some circles but ultimately failed at the box office-25 performances on Broadway. (CASABLANCA and JEZEBEL were based on Broadway flops, so at times Hollywood can turn things around for certain stage properties). Warren Beatty was nominated for a Tony award for his performance in the play (His role was given to Richard Beymer in the movie). Carol Haney (from THE PAJAMA GAME) portrayed the Woodward part and Betty Field originated the role which Claire Trevor did on screen. The working title for the movie was CELEBRATION. Fox bought the screen rights intending it for Marilyn Monroe, who died before production began in earnest. Kim Novak was mentioned as a replacement and I have read that Natalie Wood was thought of for the Carol Lynley role. Interestingly,Michael J Pollard and Gypsy Rose Lee have supporting roles in the movie.(Pollard recreated his stage role). I believe it was the first movie directed by Franklin J. Schaffner, who went on to direct PATTON and THE PLANET OF THE APES, Joanne Woodward- who I once met backstage in NYC after a performance of CANDIDA in 1981- was nominated for a Laurel Award for Best Actress for this role. As far as I know, this movie has only been available on VHS in a Panned and Scanned transfer (released 1986) and has not been broadcast in LBX yet. BTW, an interesting cast member in SOUND AND THE FURY is John Beal, who began in the '30's in movies such as LES MISERABLES (Marius) and played the title character in the Katherine Hepburn movie THE LITTLE MINISTER. His last movie was THE FIRM with Tom Cruise. Also, a French actress, Francoise Rosay, is in the movie. She worked in France, England and the USA and began in movies in 1911.

Some extra notes on THE STRIPPER for anyone interested. I recently picked up the Film Score Monthly CD release of the (excellent) Jerry Goldsmith score. (Goldsmith worked with Schaffner on other occasions, eg. PATTON.The fact that FSM released the soundtrack music of this movie is a sign that it may be under consideration by the folks at Twilight Time). The film's producer - Jerry Wald- died suddenly of a heart attack in '62, when the film was in post-production. Darryl F. Zanuck had been re-instated as the studio head and basically took the movie out of Schaffner's hands, re-editing it. Goldsmith saw both cuts and publicly expressed support for Schaffner's original version. Zanuck -whose re-edits in the past had often made big improvements to some Fox movies- gave the film its final title and played up the sensational aspects of the story, cutting a few crucial scenes inc one in which the Woodward character attempted suicide after being rejected by Kenny (Richard Beymer). Schaffner had decided to make the film more of a character study of the Woodward role and had minimized the roles of other characters, leaving some (eg. Carol Lynley's character) on the cutting room floor. Fox also planned to release an EP of Woodward's songs (she went into vocal training for the part, but her minimal singing ability was probably perfect for the "loser" character of the movie and it's unlikely she'd have made the charts (!)) The film was given short shrift by US critics and the public, however some European critics saw values in it even while acknowledging that the director's vision had been somewhat obscured by the studio. If Fox still have Schaffner's original cut in the vaults, I for one would love to see that on a disc with Zanuck's version. Hopefully, the TWILIGHT powers-that-be will read this!

Hi FoxyMulder. Have not heard anything re THE TALL MEN. It has a good score by Victor Young which was released by Varese-Sarabande in '07, so they might get around to it. Wikapedia have a page devoted to Twilight Time releases which seems to be regularly updated. Does anyone know when the pre-order date is likely to be for HIGH TIME? Gary Cooper was slated for the lead role in this but had to bow out due to the state of his terminal illness. It was re-fashioned to fit Bing Crosby's screen persona. I love the Henry Mancini score and there are some interesting supporting players egs. Richard Beymer (pre- WEST SIDE STORY, possibly his first teen role), Tuesday Weld and Patrick Adiarte (Prince Chulalongkorn in THE KING AND I and James Shigeta's brother in FLOWER DRUM SONG).
Re the Schaffner cut of THE STRIPPER, we can sometimes be surprised by what is still languishing in vaults (often mis-labelled,eg the pre-release print of THE BIG SLEEP which turned up in the '90's). At least as the movie was shot in b+w, if a print still exists it won't be suffering from colour-fading. Let's hope someone at Fox does a search.

Does Twilight Time have The Tall Men in their release schedule. ?
Ha, I think I know why you're asking. It was on Film4 yesterday in HD (I think you have to view it through Virgin to get HD, & I haven't got an HD TV box anyway). The Enemy Below was also on, but that looked like an upscale to me, where as the bits I saw of The Tall Men looked like the real thing.

It was indeed, although i saw it last year and didn't watch it yesterday, i noted it was on though and got to thinking that i would love a Blu ray release of this film, i refuse to give Sky my money and only have Freesat ( No Virgin in this area ) and the Film4 channel is just standard definition.

A few days back they had Challenge To Lassie on, it's from 1949 and is basically a version of the Greyfriar's Bobby tale, the accents are nothing like Edinburgh folks and the print they were using seemed to have the yellow layer failure vinegar thing going on, lot's of yellow and faded visuals to the image, bit like the print they show of The Quiet Man, it got me thinking, Lassie needs a Blu ray boxset, they can include the 2005 version which i quite enjoyed.

All I care about is Twilight Time releasing movies that were on DVD that had no supplements so Im not stuck with 2 versions of the same film :)
