Jim, as it’s your tourney, you can do as you like, but I don’t think that Crouching Tiger, Hidder Dragon is 100% foreign. I would have thought it a good bit American, even considering the subject matter, casting, location and language.

Lew you're right. I forgot it had joint production credits.

This'll also disqualify some of the later Bond films (in case someone is thinking of nominating them)

I'll update my nom list.

Nominate:
Shall We Dance? - Masayuki Suo's charming film is very amusing as well as a touching commentary on Japanese society.
Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi (Spirited Away) - Nearly all of Miyazaki's films could be nominated in this category, but because I saw Spirited Away in Tokyo on the second day of its release, this film will always have a special place in my heart. What a magical movie.

Second:
Iron Monkey - Truly one of the finest martial arts movies ever made.

Third:
Drunken Master 2 - Jaw-dropping fights and my vote for Chan's all-time greatest film.
Kiki's Delivery Service (Mahou no Takkyubin) - Another magical Miyazaki film.
Brotherhood of the Wolf (Le Pacte des Loups) - To quote Chris Vognar of the Dallas Morning News,
"If you see one French costume drama martial arts werewolf secret society romance this year, make sure this is it."

You'll have to fill me in on how Bride of Frankenstein was a non-us production. Wasn't it fully financed by Universal and shot at the studio?

No offense, but it seems this tourney is veering off a little into the usual thing.

I was hoping this would be more inclined towards foreign language films than just anything not made in Hollywood.

I also don't get how some of these nominations can be considered "fun." Great cinema perhaps, but not particularly "fun" in the same spirit as I thought this tourney was intended.

That being said, I'll probably still vote if I can. :p)

My thoughts exactly. I was excited about this tournament until I realized that there was Hitchcock, Beatles and Bond in it.

Ok

Lew,

Sorry but I'm throwing out your Nom of Bride of Frankenstein as its no way a foreign film.

George,

I'm throwing out 2001 & Strangelove as both were joint efforts with the US.

No offense taken. I did intend for this to be anything outside the US as I did want to include British/Aussie/NZ films along with some of the great fun silents of Germany.

It does seem to be getting lopsided toward English language films which was not my intent.

I'll put it up to a vote.

Only Foreign Language Films
vs.
Keep as is

You need to make those calls, but every source I have (and I've checked a number of books, as well as IMDB and even my old Cinemania 97 disc) has those as British films, and most of those will list a film as UK/US if appropriate.
