I a person had a small business or product how would one register the name as a trademark? What kind of costs are involved and what kind of protection does it offer?

If you want a "registered" trademark (®), you would have to register in Canada first, which is about $800 last time I checked. Then you have to register in every country you want protection in.
All this really does is give you evidence to use when you sue someone for infringement.
This is a link outlining trademark info in Canada (a law firm that specialises in it), they also have links to the government offices.

i don't know if this is legal or not, but it seemed like a good and "upholding" idea.
a friend had some sort of document he wanted to keep track of. he emailed it to himself and figured that was proof enough that the document existed on that date. i think he even said it was a legally accepted method?

I don't know if an e-mail would hold up in court. They could be changed. I have heard of actually mailing it to yourself. This way it would have a postmark date. Obviously leave it sealed.

Why? Although low-tech, it sounds like a pretty good idea to prove something on a specific date.
