Why couldn't they just leave a good thing alone? They have redesigned the cover art for Signs, and the new version sucks (in my opinion):

For comparison's sake, here's the original (and much better) cover:

Edit: I typed the topic too quickly, should be "Touchstone" hehe [IMG]

They must think that Mel Gibson's mug sells DVDs.

Market research shows that people buy movies based on the actor in them, hence the "look at my noggin" covers

I agree. The redesigned cover is atrocious. It makes me not want to buy the disc. Just add the Vista banner to the top of the original artwork. Lose the faces already.

That's pretty bad, might have to print my own cover for that one.

I figured they would change the cover art since it was upgraded to a Vista Series release.

Not toooooo bad... however, there are a few mistakes an amateur in photoshop should know better than to make.
    1. Mel Gibson's head gets cut off on the top by the vista banner and is half covered by his own credit besides.
    2. Also, the house and the trees... while the perspective change generally works for that artwork, you can tell they just took the original poster and vertically compressed it... look at the two trees and the house... they're squat as can be... even with out the second box as comparison, it's obvious. It would have been easy enough to compress it and then composite the original in from the horizon line up. Hell, even I could do that, and I'm no marketing professional.[/list=1]
      Doesn't mean I won't still buy it though[IMG]

also very inconsistent light sources... the son's lightsource seems to be coming from the right (his shadow's on the left), even though Gibson's flashlight is to the left.

They were afraid the original one would be mistaken for a Led Zeppelin compilation.

SO a VISTA in a keepcase? Darn, I rather liked the slipcases, were definitely some of the more elegant cases in my DVD collection, especially the fantastic Pearl Harbor. It really is a shame such a great DVD got wasted on such a lousy movie.

Remember that at the video store, the DVD cover alone must "close the sale" in getting people to rent a film that they may not have seen, and Mel Gibson is a proven selling commodity. That said, I agree that the new montage cover is poor and overcrowded with images as compared to the simpler and more compelling crop circle cover.

As a graphic designer, if I handed in the 2nd design I'd get fired. If I handed in the first one I'd get a pay increase.

I hate the new artwork, and I agree that the studio's logic is that they are trying to sell the actors. My question is, why did the studio think that this wasn't necessary for the original poster. As I remember this movie did quite well in the theater withouth Gibson's face on the poster. It seems like their logic is only half right.
