Boy, however you look at it, that's a tough one. It's great seeing everyones lists. It would be so boring if they were all the same. I'm going to look at this a little differently. Here's the ten movies I'd want in my collection just because I have a blast watching them (no particular order):

1) Rambo 4 (the brutality of this movie just makes me smile)
2) Planet Terror / Death Proof (plain fun)
3) Star Wars (movie with the most impact on my life)
4) Band of Brothers (my favorite "war movie")
5) Terminator 2 (close between 2 & 3 --- give me a break, Kristanna Loken is hot)
6) Vacation (hilarious-- and I love roadtrips)
7) Back to the Future 3 (It's close between 1 & 3, gotta give the nod to the "old west")
8) 300 (They couldn't have cast King Leonidas any better. Gerard Butler was perfect)
9) Young Frankenstein (the gags make me laugh every time)
10) Indiana Jones (2nd most important movie of my childhood)
11) Serenity (love the cast)
12) Superman (Chris Reeve IS Superman)
13) Stand By Me (love the nostalgic look at growing up)
14) War Games (what's not to like about Global Thermonuclear War?)

Sorry, I couldn't stop at 10. It would be easy to keep going, but I think I should at least make an attempt to keep it close to ten.

Like Eric, I've never seen the Godfather, and generally have no desire to see what most consider the "classics." I don't doubt they are "great works," but I just personally don't have the urge to see them. Anyway, this is just my list of what I'd want to keep if all I could have were "about" ten movies-- not necessarily what I think should be considered the greatest movies of all time by everyone. Just what I would enjoy watching over and over if that's all I had.

Hanson, I only saw Rocky and never saw any of the sequels. Didn't like the first one at all, and I can't tell you how many times in my life people have said "how could you not like Rocky!?" It was a 2 hour long cliche in my opinion.....Pulp Fiction was a half and half movie for me. I liked the first half, not the rest. Silence of the Lambs was great and should have made my list.

Bryan, Young Frankenstein still makes me laugh every time I catch it or even just parts of it on TV.

I can't imagine any self proclaimed movie buffs collection not having all of these (though if I personally had to limit myself to ten films, there would be a few substitutions with titles from the supplemental list)

1) Gone With The Wind
2) The Wizard Of Oz
3) Casablanca
4) The Godfather
5) Raiders Of The Lost Ark (or The Adventures Of Robin Hood)
6) The Ten Commandments
7) Singin' In The Rain (or The Sound Of Music)
8) The Apartment
9) The Searchers
10) Bambi (or Pinocchio)

any of these could be substituted for just about any of the above- they are all more than worthy
The Seventh Seal
Invasion Of The Body Snatchers
The Day The Earth Stood Still
King Kong
Young Frankenstein
Titanic
Dawn Of The Dead
Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory
The Music Man
Lawrence Of Arabia
Amelie
Black Narcissus
Die Hard

and my personal absolute library essential
Jean de Florette/ Manon Of The Spring

My personal top ten list in no particular order:

1. Godfather trilogy. Amazingly I've never seen it nor own it but it should be on every shelf. Haven't gotten around to it though ...
2. LOTR trilogy. Pick which edition but I'll go with the EE.
3. Transformers. Just plain cool though it is truly a popcorn flick.
4. Shawshank Redemption. I have to watch it whenever it is on. Phenominal story.
5. Titanic. Untimate chick flick but so be it. I'll ruin the story and say the ship sinks.

6. Star Wars - ESB though you certainly must own all six.
7. Ben Hur. Long but good movie. Who can forget the chariot racing scene?

8. Lawrence of Arabia. Slow movie, lot of sand, but is very good.

9. How many from Pixar can go here? They've been doing something right.

10. Mel Brooks: History of the World - Part 1. Giant joint on the run. Love it.

I'm certain there are far better ones out there, such as Matrix trilogy, BTTF trilogy, August Rush (excellent soundtrack, IMO), etc., but most are ones I enjoy and will watch over and over. My philosophy is to buy those movies you will watch over and over. Certain ones you buy because they are classics.
