I absolutely agree the dialogue was mixed VERY low. I also found one online review that did mention it (over at FilmScore Monthly's Aisle Seat column):

"Paramount's Special Edition DVD looks fantastic (in 2.35 widescreen), though the 5.1 Dolby Digital sound mix is recorded at a noticeably low level -- I had to push my center channel to the max just to hear the dialogue"

Thanks for finding a review that mentions this deficiency. Based on the conflicting responses, it almost sounds like there could be some "bad" DVDs out there (although I've never really subscibed to this theory before).

FYI; I did not have any problems with the dialogue in TPM or MR.
