List updated. We're up to 50 on the 'in' list.
It's a nice list overall, though a bit top-heavy with modern films. For those of you that are low on seconds and thirds, you can have five more of each; but there's a clause: they have to be used on nominated films made before 1960. Surely some of you have seen White Heat, The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, Spellbound, Frankenstein, and The Bride of Frankenstein?
What a shame that The Ruling Class probably won't make it in. :frowning: It features one of Peter O'Toole's best performances as one of the fruitiest loops in cinema history.
Please note, SteveGon:
I seconded:
Second:
Dr. Hans Reinhardt--(Maximilian Schell) The Black Hole
Noted. Jen, you're the anime fan aren't you? No second for Akira?
Also, Pi would make a great match for A Beautiful Mind.
Keep 'em coming!
See post 100 for an updated noms list.

Well, my pal and friend Mr. Gonzales, I'll appease your ailing mind by seconding The Ruling Class - Jack Gurney, 14th Earl of Gurney. I finally watched it. And I'll second Romeo is Bleeding - Mona Demarkov.

Well, let's see... on the noms list we have 11 that I either nominated or seconded already, and about 30-35 that I haven't seen. As for the rest:
Akira - Tetsuo Shima: saw the movie about 10 years ago, don't remember Tetsuo very well, and besides I hated it
Barton Fink - Charlie Meadows/Karl 'Madman' Mundt: another one I don't remember well enough
The Black Hole - Hans Reinhardt*: saw like 20 years ago, no clue
The Conversation - Harry Caul: not crazy
Day of the Dead - Dr. Logan: don't remember (is he the one who says "I hope you choke on it"?)
Frankenstein - Victor Frankenstein: okay, what the hell... second
From Hell - Sir Edward Gull: dumb movie (btw, according to iMDB, it's Sir WILLIAM Gull)
Goldfinger - Auric Goldfinger*: ehh, this nom just doesn't "do it for me"
King Kong - King Kong*: he's a monkey
Little Shop of Horrors - Orin Scivillo, D.D.S.*: okay, third
Lolita - Humbert Humbert (James Mason): still don't think he's that crazy
The Lord of the Rings - Grima Wormtongue: evil != crazy
101 Dalmatians - Cruella De Vil: see above
The Producers - Franz Liebkind: not thrilled about this nom either, but I'll second it
Reservoir Dogs - Mr. Blonde: I don't like Tarantino
Seven Samurai - Kikuchiyo: not that crazy
Sisters - Danielle Breton/Dominique Blanchion*: okay, third
Spellbound - John Ballantine: not crazy enough
Spider-Man - Norman Osborne/The Green Goblin*: nah
A Streetcar Named Desire - Blanche DuBois*: third
A Zed & Two Noughts - Oliver & Oswald Deuce: don't remember

...and about 30-35 that I haven't seen.
I keep forgetting that not everyone has seen the same amount of movies I've seen. FWIW, I've seen most of the movies on both list.
Anyway...
Akira - Tetsuo Shima: saw the movie about 10 years ago, don't remember Tetsuo very well, and besides I hated it
- Fair enough. Tetsuo went nuts when he was endowed with psychic powers. No biggie if he doesn't make it in.
Barton Fink - Charlie Meadows/Karl 'Madman' Mundt: another one I don't remember well enough
- It's been awhile of me, too.
The Black Hole - Hans Reinhardt*: saw like 20 years ago, no clue
- I'd say he fits.
The Conversation - Harry Caul: not crazy
- not crazy, but obsessed and paranoid. Admittedly, this is a so-so nom
Day of the Dead - Dr. Logan: don't remember (is he the one who says "I hope you choke on it"?)
- Sgt. Rhodes says: "Choke on 'em!" when the zombies start eating his guts. :D Dr. Logan was one of the scientists looking for a way to keep the zombies at bay by performing ghastly experiments on them. He was nuts.
Frankenstein - Victor Frankenstein: okay, what the hell... second
- he's obsessed. Kind of a so-so nom, but he'd make a cool match for Dr. Logan.
From Hell - Sir Edward Gull: dumb movie (btw, according to iMDB, it's Sir WILLIAM Gull)
- Gotcha. Not big on the movie, but he fits.
Goldfinger - Auric Goldfinger*: ehh, this nom just doesn't "do it for me"
- Still, he's obsessed. Plus he'd make a cool match for Fred C. Dobbs!
King Kong - King Kong*: he's a monkey
- yeah, but I said I'd take a few non-human noms. And he was obsessed with Fay Wray (can't blame him). He falls under the 'stick him in there for variation' category. FYI, Kong would be an ape, not a monkey. Just being anal. :D
Little Shop of Horrors - Orin Scivillo, D.D.S.*: okay, third
- cool.
Lolita - Humbert Humbert (James Mason): still don't think he's that crazy
- again, he's definitely obsessed. When you kill someone over a bimbo like Lolita, you've got a problem.
The Lord of the Rings - Grima Wormtongue: evil != crazy
- agree.
101 Dalmatians - Cruella De Vil: see above
- obsessed. Anyone who would kill cute little doggies just to make a coat is nuts.
The Producers - Franz Liebkind: not thrilled about this nom either, but I'll second it
- admittedly a so-so one, but a cool match for Dr. Strangelove (nutsy Nazis)
Reservoir Dogs - Mr. Blonde: I don't like Tarantino
- don't care if he makes it in or not. no biggie either way.
Seven Samurai - Kikuchiyo: not that crazy
- another so-so one.
Sisters - Danielle Breton/Dominique Blanchion*: okay, third
- cool.
Spellbound - John Ballantine: not crazy enough
- another so-so one, but he fits.
Spider-Man - Norman Osborne/The Green Goblin*: nah
- he fits. :)
A Streetcar Named Desire - Blanche DuBois*: third
- cool.
A Zed & Two Noughts - Oliver & Oswald Deuce: don't remember
- they're obsessed (very much so), but I don't expect them to make it in.

Okay, I'll start us off with a four-banger!
I'll let this run through tomorrow. Then I'll go to two brackets per day, with new ones posted every morning. :)
Round 1 - Bracket 1
The comic book match:
The Joker (Batman) vs. Elijah Price (Unbreakable)
Round 1 - Bracket 2
The "There's gold in them thar hills!" match:
Auric Goldfinger (Goldfinger) vs. Fred C. Dobbs (The Treasure of the Sierra Madre)
Round 1 - Bracket 3
The Dennis Hopper match:
Howard Payne (Speed) vs. Frank Booth (Blue Velvet)
Round 1 - Bracket 4
The "Vietnam was hell" match:
Sgt. Barnes (Platoon) vs. Killer Kane (The Ninth Configuration)
How I would vote:
The Joker (kinda tough)
Auric Goldfinger (sorry, Dobbsy!)
Frank Booth (easily)
Killer Kane (easily - besides, he'd eat Barnes for breakfast!)

Elijah Price (he's more interesting, and we've got enough Nicholson in this tournament anyway)
abstain (no Sierra)
Frank Booth (a longtime favorite of mine)
abstain (no 9th)

I'm utterly stunned that Mabel Longhetti hasn't been thirded yet. I've never seen such an amazing portrayal of instability.
