Well, call me OCD. I like to hang on to earlier DVD sets of TV shows and movies. Especially now with blu ray, I like to have that DVD copy for play back on older DVD systems in my house and the extras that weren't ported over like in this case. I'm surprised too.

I go both ways on this and sometimes it's a tough decision. Last night and this morning I spent a little time with the new S4 BD and the S4 DVD set. My thoughts, based on Travis's list of non-ported S4 features:

Miniature: color scenes from the syndicated version -- This is the one that bothers me. Wasn't that one of the big deals when the episode was unearthed in 1984?
bonus features: photo gallery (17 pictures) -- Photo galleries, I have to admit, are usually my least-visited feature except when they contain good reproductions of advertising artwork or other documents. I rarely get much thrill browsing through photos themselves. That's just me.
billboards (1 is not ported over- Micrin/Pretty Perm) -- Played straight through on the DVD, there are nearly five minutes of S4 billboards. I love this stuff, but if we're only sacrificing one billboard out of all of those, then I can live with that.

comic book (.pdf) -- This would have saddened me, because though I lament the loss of these and other comics I had as a kid during those years, I have no intention now of getting into the collector's market for them, so good PDF reproductions are a godsend. However, PDF files can be saved to your hard drive or wherever you want, so, not a loss after all. I just saved this S4 one and it's beautiful. I'll do likewise with the rest of the PDF features.

Everyone's mileage will vary, of course, but the bottom line for me -- purely as regards the S4 set -- is that the color scenes are the only loss. I'll have to see how I feel about the other seasons, and I'll wait till S5 is out before making a final decision on the whole set.

Many thanks to Travis for putting his raging case of OCD to work for the benefit of us all. Seriously!

And here I figured this list would be old news.
The colorized scenes from Miniature were only part of the episode when it was shown in syndication (or just that one airing in the 1980's?) so it's not part of the network version of the episode. I'd rather see the scenes on there than not but since it wasn't part of the original version of the episode, I'm not that bothered by its exclusion.

I went back and rewatched the colorized scenes. It's only the dollhouse material that gets the color treatment. The rest stays in black and white. To be honest, I don't think the footage is in anywhere near as good condition as the proper episode with the proper mastering. Also, the colors themselves, like most attempts to paste color on black and white materials, look pretty strange. This is probably fine for an environment as unreal as the dollhouse, but it's actually quite jarring to see it.

That said, I wish they could have kept the feature for the Blus. If anything, this just confirms why I've tended to packrat my SD DVD editions even after the Blu edition comes out. You never know...

For the record, the colorized version did air once on Sci-fi (the 1995 New Year's Day marathon to be exact) but yeah its kinda ephemeral.

These sets have been GREAT so I hate to bump this thread just to relay potential bad news again but on the commentary for Printer's Devil, Marc Scott Zicree says that there will be a documentary on Charles Beaumont on the set. Unless there's bonus features not mentioned in the S5 press release, it sounds like there will be a bonus disc with the inevitable series set. I really hope that Image releases the bonus disc as an individual release.

They better not just have a bonus disc that only comes with a giant set like that. I'll give the guys on MASH credit for at least releasing that material separately with the final episode.

^ That certainly seems like what he'd be referring to (how many Charles Beaumont documentaries can there be?). I found Zicree's site and based on his blogs, it seems like most of the commentaries were recorded in late 2009 and early 2010 so maybe between then and now, it was decided to release it on its own rather than as part of a TZ set?

I had initially held off on buying TZ on BD because of all the problems with S1 that were well documented in another thread. Fortunately Image owned up to these and corrected them (thanks to all those HTF members who posted how to identify corrected sets) and so when Costco put these out for $44 per season I jumped on this.

And I'm glad I did. Having watched most of S1 I am amazed at how well these look and sound. Nothing against color, but watching a high quality presentation of B&W mystery/horror themed material is just about the ultimate in entertainment.

It's been great fun revisiting old favorites and seeing many episodes for the first time in years. Needless to say I have a lot of TZ to keep me occupied now over the upcoming months.
