I love Meet Me in St. Louis, but haven't seen 42nd Street yet.
The second match-up is very difficult. Two great films. I went with Stray Dog, because I think Kurosawa does a marvelous job of conveying the post-war zeitgeist of a thoroughly defeated nation. The oppressive heat seems palpable and utterly fitting. It's also a great crime film infused with Kurosawa's samurai ethos. I wonder how different it would have been had it had been made years later and didn't need to be vetted by the American occupiers.
I've got my TIVO set to record A Matter of Life & Death tomorrow night, but for now I'll abstain (I expect to like it, but I doubt if it'll climb over Wizard of Oz).
Planning on recording it too, though I keep cutting the endings off movies. Happened again with The 49th Parallel last week. I can't get my VCR to switch off "SP" so I need to start using longer running tapes. Yes, I know I need TIVO.
