In June 2006 Warner Bros joined a chat hosted by the Home Theater Forum to talk about their products, and answer questions from HTF members. Paul Miller asked about The Smurfs, and got a positive response:

[Paul Miller] As a fan of 80s cartoons, is there any chance of The Smurfs coming to DVD anytime soon?

[WARNER BROS] We are working on The Smurfs and hope to release it in 2007.

The are 421 Smurf episodes. Six are Specials. Lets do all we can to make Warner Bros. bring "The Smurfs" DVD's come out in SEASON SETS not Volumes Sets. Volume sets suck. It's better if they keep the seasons episodes together. Rather then spliting up the seasons in Volume Sets.

I hope they include these because there were quite a few prime time Smurf specials through out the series.

What is the name of the episode where Zombie Smurf is spreading an undead virus by biting other Smurfs on the tail? I remember that being one creepy and weird episode.

I don't know, but if you're talking about the episode where they turn purple, it's definitely the best Smurfs episode ever.

According to:

http://www.tvshowsondvd.com/newsitem.cfm?NewsID=7768

It seems that the info on the trailer has been changed. It will now only be Season 1 Volume 1. This will contain "19 cartoons", which amounts to half of the season. The good news is that it will contain the Springtime special as a bonus as well as a Smurf video.

The release date is Dec. 4 and the MSRP is $26.99.

Bummer! If they go by airdate order, we'll have to wait for Volume 2 for The Purple Smurf.

By the way, if there are 256 episodes, it would take about 12 volumes to get the entire series. Think that will happen? I sure hope so.

I am confused...there were only 13 episodes in the the first season. If you look at the airdates, there were 3 "stories" per episode. Huh?

Scott, if I remember correctly, the Smurfs ran for 90 minutes every Saturday morning (at least in the early days). You would get three adventures every Saturday morning.

One of the things about that kind of rotation that even kids noticed, is that we would get repeats very frequently.

D'OH! I'm so stupid! I remember the show running for 90 mins. Didn't each episode have end credits and then the show came back on? I almost remember the bumpers as well.

Will they have the original openings? On Boomerang they call them "Smurfs Adventures," which appears to be a syndicated opening, and often they show PAL-sourced versions which sound a half-tone higher.

Maybe we will luck out and they will release the complete S1 (for the hardcore fans) on the same day as S1V1 (for the casual fans and impluse buyers). One can hope.

Well, I'm pleased I never bought into this series. I was waiting to see if WB would continue this series in good form. They haven't! The 2nd season isn't a complete season, and it isn't half a season. It's five episodes from season 2 on one disc. So four more releases like this one and we will have the complete season 2...Yeah. Who are the intended buyers for a foolish stunt like this? A 6 year old with a weeks allowance? Does Warner Brothers know they are alienating their core audience? We want season sets(or half seasons) neatly packaged and slim. We do not want gazillion releases to comprise one season.
Holy crap, if this is the hot new way to release tv shows on dvd, I'm out for good. My mind's blown.

I totally agree with you Bryan. I had intended on collecting this series next year but after hearing about this latest release, I'll definitely pass. I can live with 1/2 season releases if need be, but this is ridiculous. I wanted to own this show..........but I don't want it that badly.

This is perhaps a new low for any studio. I sincerely hope somebody loses their job over this.

I'm also disappointed with the 1 disc-5 episode set up. I could live with the half-season releases, but this is a huge step down.
