``Star Wars: Episode I -- The Phantom Menace'' has set a new first-week sales record, with an estimated 2.2 million DVD units purchased by consumers since the title was released on Oct. 16.
That sales figure, which equates to more than $45 million in consumer spending on the DVD, barely eclipses the old record set by ``The Mummy Returns'' just two weeks ago, when Universal reported first-week sales at 2 million units.
The next challenger is the year's biggest movie, ``Shrek,'' to be released Nov. 2, followed by the release on Nov. 20 of last year's biggest movie, ``Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas.''
Although ``Phantom'' distributor Fox did not give a specific number of units sold, the studio has reportedly shipped about 3.3 million copies of the title.
Fox and Lucasfilm reported late Monday that 65% of all units shipped had already been purchased by consumers and that some retailers could run out of copies.
``Our tracking shows that the sales velocity for 'Episode I' is greater than 'Gladiator,' the No. 1-selling DVD of all time, and 'The Mummy Returns,' the previous No. 1-selling DVD of the year,'' noted Mike Dunn, executive VP of sales and marketing at Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. ``We're doing everything possible to insure that we are not in an out-of-stock situation at retail, but given this velocity of sales, it'll be close.''
Lucasfilm VP of marketing Jim Ward said, ``This stellar sales performance is even more impressive given that it is nearly three years after its theatrical release and 18 months after its VHS release.''

This film has been modified from its original version. It has been formatted to fit George Lucas's at-the-moment whims.

It's his film, he can do with as he pleases. Either at-the-moment or any other moment.

I think the Lucasfilm people actually said that Attack of the Clones would follow the model of other theatrical releases and see a DVD release late 2002 or early 2003.

From a business perspective, it would actually make sense to sell the remaining SW DVDs sooner rather than later; after all, the money to be made now is worth more later (time value of money) and they can always rerelease a couple of times (we all know that Lucasfilm isn't afraid to do that).
My comment to Jim Ward is: Imagine what it would be like if you released Ep II day-&-date with the VHS!
2.2 million sold in the first week means almost 1 out of every 10 DVD player owners purchased this disc on the week it streeted. Now thats impressive.

I think that Wal-Mart and Blockbuster and other pro pan&scan places should refuse to carry the Phantom Menace because it's only available widescreen. After all, with their extensive marketing research they know that all of their customers won't buy/rent it, but will only bitch about the black bars.
Of course if anybody high up at those places had half a brain, some obvious flaws in the full-frame only mentality might come to light.

I'm fairly certain the percentage of the installed DVD base is quite a bit better than 1 in 10. There have been a bit over 20 million players sold, but that would not reflect the actual number of households. A fairly high percentage of player sales are to previous DVD owners. How many on this forum have bought two or more players in the past four and a half years?
Hell, I probably account for a good chunk of player sales by myself [IMG].

Judging by the kids I've met, interestingly it seems the vast majority couldn't care less if a movie is W/S or P&S, as long as its a good movie. It's just some parents that seem to care, even for kiddie movies, and it's the misled low-end stores like Wal-Mart.
I personally dislike Phantom Menace, but I love it for the fact that it's a movie that people of all ages like, it's aimed at the general public, it's carried everywhere, and it's ONLY widescreen, yet still is the fastest selling DVD of all time.

Gee, and I still have the same Panny A120 I bought 2 years ago, and the DVD-ROM drive that came with the Compaq 900Mhz computer I bought this past April...
    I need a 2nd player for the bedroom! I just can't decide:
    • 5-Disc Carousel
    • Nuon
    • Recordable
    • Multi-Region
    • Portable
    Sigh.
