I'm want the movie but I thought I saw something about the video quality being bad. Can someone shed any light?
Thanks

I think it looks decent. It's definitely too "grainy" - but not terribly distracting. The colors and shadows look pretty good, as well. If you like this film, I recommend getting it. However, I wonder if this will be re-released by Universal within the next 6-12 mos.

This is another one Universal should release as an Ultimate Edition instead of all the other crap. A DTS track, improved picture and a little more extras than production noted would be nice. A commentary and documentary on a separate disc should do fine. We'll see.

Dave is right, it's quite grainy. I find it very similar looking to 12 Monkeys which is another Universal title that came out around the same time.
It could look much better but being one of my all time favs, I recommend the disc.

This gets asked every year or so and you will get varying answers.
Here is my opinion...
Casino on DVD looks exactly liked it looked in the theater.
It is supposed to look exactly like it does!
The cinematographer used similar washed out reddish colors like Pulp Fiction.
Reading various reviews of the DTS LD at the time, you aren't missing anything from the DD track on the DVD.
So, unless they announce a super duper special edition with commentary, grab a copy of this excellent DVD.
Better yet, spend $7 more and get the Carlito's Way/Casino 2 pack.

Doug,
I don't remember seeing that much grain when I saw Casino in the movie theater. :)
However, I do think the colors were pretty much on target.

I saw this movie 4 times in the theater. It could look a lot better on DVD.

I was going through so old VHS, and came across this movie. I was thinking about buying the DVD but I know the one that is currently out has been out for quite awhile. Has anyone heard of a SE version coming out in the near future(less than a year) before I spend the money on the current version. Thanks

I thought about getting Casino, along with Pulp Fiction, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Reservoir Dogs, and The Deer Hunter, but I'm afraid that a special edition will come shortly after. Is it safe to buy any of those titles or will we see a special edition in less than a year? I heard rumors that Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs will get SEs sometime this year.

I guess Universal was too busy making Ultimate Editions of mummy and teen movies a while back.
I'm happy with the current version, but I would buy it and love it it if Universal were to reissue Casino and include a DTS track.
One can only hope.
EDIT: Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed American Pie and The Mummy but Casino is a more worthy candidate for an Ultimate Edition release.

All of these titles are rumored to be future SE's. I would wait personally.
I'm pretty sure I am going to wait, especially for Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs because it sounds like there is a good posibility of SEs coming out this year.

Bill,

There is one definite in your list, that is Resevoir Dogs. Ten year anniversary edition, coming in July.

The current release/transfer of Casino is respectable - just too many artifacts and it looks a little too "videolike." I've heard of no rumors of this being re-released.

I also agree that Universal has to stop these ridiculous Ultimate Editions for films which already received good releases. Universal has MANY poor tansfer or pan and scan titles which need to be re-done.

while we're on the subject, is there worse studio dvd-wise than Universal? Sorry to be negative, but they need a good thrashing....(cough)...Ron?....(cough).....

Yeah Warner Bros!!!!!!...Snapper casing,Reluctance to use DTS and using 384 DD on just about every release. And second rate treatment on not all, but most of their catalogue titles. And a big crime as far as I'm concerned ,refusing to release a mamouth library they hold of Horror Films...Worst DVD studio in my opinion!!!

At least Warner usually puts out a good quality transfer at a good price. I guess it's a compromise for snappers, lack of DTS, and extras. However, I rather have a good transfer for a good price. :)

I got Casino a while back and the DVD is acceptable. I found it for a REALLY good price of 5 dollars at a retail store. It includes a very nice 5.1 track along with a no frills transfer. I don't suspect they could fit a whole bunch on one disc since this is a 3 hour movie. The only thing I would want on a reissue is a Scorsese commentary. I say get it now since if you look around a bit I'm sure you can get it for a reasonable price elsewhere.
