    Hey everyone,

I was just wondering who was getting, "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" when it is released on DVD on 9/24? This is an easy descision for me, since it's my favorite show ever (well, that and The Golden Girls) It also has a good amount of special features, and the DVD is actually produced by Ed Asner.

Does anyone know where I can get a review of this DVD? I want to see what I'm getting!

    Andy

I'm getting it too, but I haven't seen any reviews yet. Very odd for a Fox set coming out in 4 days...

As I posted in another thread, Fox sent out only partial screeners to most reviewers, not the whole set. That might be why you're not seeing reviews online.

I don't have the time to write a review here, but I can say that the set is fantastic. Ed Asner is credited as one of the producers of the DVD, but he downplayed his involvement when I interviewed him last night, giving most of the credit for the DVD presentation to his son, Matthew, and his son's business partner, Danny Gold.

The set is attractively designed, with each disc forming one of the four letters in M-A-R-Y and coming in a multi-gatefold package similar to The Simpsons. The worthwhile extras include a 90-minute retrospective documentary, a trivia game, photo gallery, footage from the Emmy Awards and promo TV spots. There also is commentary on the first episode by Ed Asner, director Jay Sandrich and writer Allen Burns--as well as commentary on two other episodes by others. A 16-page booklet includes some notes, credits and an episode guide.

The best news? Asner said that they've already finished up Season 2, and a flier in the set says it's planned for March.

It's a shame Fox couldn't have given similar treatment to M*A*S*H, especially since Larry Gelbart was willing to participate.

I'll be getting it, natch.

I am not sure if we were offered a screener or not, but we also have a policy of not reviewing partial sets. Only final and complete retail product.

This is also my all-time favorite sitcom series. I have some very personal reasons for watching this show. The woman behind Mary, when she throws up the hat at the beginning of each episode, looks a lot like my mother. My mother passed away nearly 24 years ago, so this is a nice constant reminder of my mother.

Buying all the seasons' on DVD could get very expensive. I hope they spread out the release of each season far enough that I can recover, financially, from the purchase of the previous season.

That's a great story, Randy. And thanks for the info on the set. I was expecting it to be good, glad to see it confirmed. It's been a long time since I've seen this show - looking forward to revisiting Mary & Lou and the gang in the newsroom!
Just one question - please tell me the MTM cat is on the discs, meowing at the end of every episode! [IMG]

I just picked it up, and it looks excellent! Lots of chapter breaks, too: 10 per episode! Anyway, time to go watch them.

    Randy,

Thank you for passing along that wonderful story. Mary was on David Letterman's show this summer and revealed the woman's name when Dave showed a still photo of that scene from the opening of the show. Although I had forgotten her name.

I'll be picking it up, too. Wow, the three greatest sitcoms of all time (to me) are on DVD -- I Love Lucy, All in the Family, and now Mary Tyler Moore.
