Ron - I think we should stop talking about how emotional The Last of Us is until you finish it. Overall, the game has one of the best stories in all of gaming but it's tough to assess it as you go along.
Fair enuf!

I am already hours into this game. I would imagine at least
halfway through.

Coming off of "Wolfenstein" it took a bit of relearning all the
controls to begin to master the game.

Then there's the second part of having to build health kits,
shivs, bombs and upgrade gun parts. Most of it I figured out,
the rest I still have not.

I am playing on the easiest level possible, so it's pretty cool
how I have made it this far into the game defeating "hunters"
and "zombies" just by punching them or using something as
simple as a baseball bat or lead pipe.

I find that firing weapons is not very effective. Either that, or
I just haven't upgraded the weapons well enough.

In fact, my favorite and most effective weapon among "clickers"
and large groups of hunters/zombies is the molotov cocktail. Set
it off and everybody catches on fire.

So, I am playing this game with just the basic knowledge of how
it works -- not taking full advantage of all the upgrades and building
of weapons/health, etc.

All that being said, I am thoroughly enjoying The Last Of Us. It has
held me very captive to the point where I am playing for hours on end.

I don't find it to be emotional. There are two huge "events" thus far, and
I didn't find myself getting choked up.

It's a great game, no doubt.

BTW, at certain points you are prompted to "tilt" your controller which
then makes a clicking sound. Is that to indicate clickers in the distance?
Tilting the controller "recharges" the batteries in your "flashlight". The click is meant to signal that the recharge was successful. I find the firearms become more useful as you go along. In these types of games, I tend to favor using shotguns, semi-automatic rifles and sniper rifles. The sniper rifle always comes in handy. The molotovs are pretty useful too.

Btw the official guide recommends you play the game on Hard. It is challenging to say the least but also makes the game last longer as you check every crack and crevice for supplies. Upgrading is essential. Enemy placement is the same on every difficulty. Just more aware and harder to kill. As Ron said shivs are very important and used to get into special supply rooms also. Upgrade your weapons as powerful as possible. You will need them. On the mode I'm playing, Survivor, there is no HUD , no listening mode, and very little supplies. And to think there is still one mode that is even more difficult..Grounded.

Playing on hard is not a smart move for someone who is not an avid gamer. Ron's doing fine with his difficulty level and won't miss any of the story because of going that route. If he finds the enemies are too easy he could crank it up. I played it on normal and it was plenty challenging.

I agree Sam. Just found it interesting that the guide recommends Hard.

I find the easiest level to be very challenging. The enemies do to come in large batches.
I couldn't it imagine it any harder. It's challenging enough for me that I can kill most all
of them with just punches and basic weapons. I do die many times, so that shows that
it's not completely a "walk in the park"

Playing on Hard makes the game "feel" like what the world looks like. You actually struggle to finish the game just like how the characters are constantly struggling to survive. I get that there's a good reason for suggesting you play it on Hard, but frankly I played it on normal.

I love The Last of Us. It's one of my favorite games of all time. It's also the very 1st I'd recommend to anyone for PS3 or PS4.

I tend to play games on Easy, maybe normal. I'm in it for the storyline/etc. and I can't keep up with the wild reflexes (I have no interest in playing online). The good is: playing on any level gives you the full storyline.

I am on easiest mode for The Last of Us and already stuck in a situation
I cannot seem to defeat.

It's very frustrating, to say the least, and I have spent about an hour playing
the same scenario over and over again.

So, even easiest mode, this game is quite challenging.

I will post the situation in spoiler mode....

Ellie is now on her own after Joel has been hurt.

She is on her way back to Joel. Comes across her camp that is surrounded by men.

She has limited weapons. One arrow. A few gun shells. One molotov cocktail.

Can't seem to be able to defeat all the men that are coming after her. Constantly
repeating situation and getting killed.

Ron. You should be able to find more ammo and weapons. And just patiently stealth kill all the enemies. That's my advice. May take a few more tries.

Damn, the situation sounds familiar. I'm trying to remember what I did. Is there any way to avoid them? Sometimes it is better to stealth your way around them, rather than engage, especially if you are low on ammo or weapons.

This will work too. I know exactly where you are and there are a few ways to proceed.

re: playing on Hard. Making the game "longer" simply by forcing me to check every nook and cranny for gear in order to get through is not very enticing.

For me it's more about a sense of accomplishment. All the items are in the same place regardless of difficulty.
