This year seems to be shaping up to be a very, very good one for horror-movie releases on blu-ray disc. And I'm not talking about the latest crappy theatricals or "straight-to-video" losers. Mainly thanks to a handful of small, independent companies (Kino, Twilight Time, Scream/Shout Factory, Olive Films, Blue Underground, et al.) that are ready, willing, and able to specialize in so-called genre entertainment, we collectors are getting a quite nice choice of titles that the so-called "majors" don't feel to be profitable (enough) to distribute on their own. Vaulted titles, either famous or obscure, like Prince of Darkness(1987) (finally!), The Howling (1981), Lifeforce (1985) (although more (unintended) comedy than horror, in my estimation), The Beast Within (1982), Bava films, such as Black Sabbath (1964) and Baron Blood (1972) (talk about scary fun!), are scheduled to make their appearance in the format. When even the (mostly silly) Monster Club (1981) and William Castle's bizarre Mr. Sardonicus (1961) are getting releases this year, I figure I can now hope, and ask for, anything, with some reasonable expectation of seeing it come forth. The season for announcing horror movie releases is not yet done and I'm hoping for a few more gems (and, sometimes, not-such-gems) to show up. My shortlist: Pumpkinhead (1988) Curse of the Werewolf (1961) The Mothman Prophecies (2002) (Hollywood movies could use more "spooks" like Indred Cold!) The KEEP (1983) (30 years and counting,Paramount!) Mario Bava's Planet of the Vampires (a.k.a. Terrore nello Spazio) (1965) The Hitcher (1986) Silver Bullet (1985) Eraserhead (1977) (Not a great fan, but it is a "classic" of bizarrerie.) God Told Me To (1976) (Okay, a "sci-fi" cop thriller, but still . . . .) City of the Dead (a.k.a. Horror Hotel) (1960) And I've got a further hankering for a few 50's horror-monster films: The Neanderthal Man (1953) (So good (and laughable) to contrast the "science" of "Neanderthals" then and now, 60 years later!) The Werewolf (1956) The Vampire (a.k.a. Mark of the Vampire) (1958) Monster on the Campus (1957) The Hideous Sun Demon (1959) Atom Age Vampire (a.k.a. Seddok, l'Erede di Satana) (1960) I Was a Teenage[d!] Werewolf (1957) Is there more than a bit of "cheese" mixed in with the "hammery"? You bet! But that just goes to show the strength and vibrancy of the format. Great stuff, good stuff, not-so-good stuff, dreck; it all has a place. There are many more for me (Terror from the Year 5,000 (1958), anyone?) But it would greedy of me to go on and on. What horror or horror-sci-fi are you looking for that you never thought would make it to blu-ray?
