well, i´m only interested in knowing if the sound on the DTS version is that much better than the DD version like everyone seems to claim. i don´t have a 6.1 system @ home, 'only' 5.1..
    thanks in advance [IMG]

I'm stuck with 5.1 channels for now... I think the main difference you will see without having the rear center channel would be the level of the bass mix. I think they actually went a little overboard with the new DTS mix. Tons and tons of bass.

From what I heard from people how know both the DD and DTS soundtrack the DTS track has to be much better. Someone even claimed it to be better than the DD soundtrack from the Japanese LD of TPM!!

IMO, it is worth having the DTS version if only for it's reference audio.

The bass man, the bass..., you don't need 6.1 to enjoy the extreme bass of this DVD.

this is one DVD to "break-in" a new sub. I put it in, and I was afraid I was going to blow my speaker. Or at least the pictures off the walls. I had the DD version, and the DTS one puts it to shame.

I just sold off my DD version because my brother sent me the DTS version for my birthday (as well as a D2R2 version of Jurassic Park DTS -- I love my brother!). There are several reasons that I would recommend the DTS version:
    1. Of course, the ungodly amounts of bass. The bass on the DTS version seems tighter, deeper and just generally more menacing.
    2. The DTS version seems a bit more transparent than the DD, placing the house's creaks and groans between channels more effectively.
    3. The DD version had a missing sound effect toward the end of the movie, where Hugh Crane screams "ELEANOR" and the scream pans right surround to left surround to left main. In the DD version, Lili Taylor turns around for no particular reason because the sound effect causing her to turn isn't there. The DTS version fixes this problem.
That being said, too many people equate heavy bass with a good DTS mix. If you want to hear DTS at its best, get THE RED VIOLIN (for music) or SAVING PRIVATE RYAN (for positioning).

Here's another vote for the DTS version.
And I'll second what Jeremy said. The Red Violin is a truely astounding DTS mix and one of the best I've heard.

The remixed 6.1 DTS track rocks. And as already stated by others, be careful with your subwoofers, as the LFE is
    *frightfully* strong! [IMG]

I don't even have a sub in my system, but this dts disc fools some of my guests.
The advantage that the dts disc has it that it was remixed for the home theater environment by Gary Rydstrom(sp?) for the dts-es discrete format and that it was mastered from a 20-bit resolution master. I don' know if a remix was done for the DD version or if the theatrical track was used, but it was mastered from a 16-bit resolution master. That's why it is unfair to use this disc in direct head to head competition with the DD-THX EX disc. I would say if your gonna buy this piece of cheese go with the dts version just for the demo factor even if you don't have dts-es (which I don't) the bass will scare the BJESUS out of you (but be careful you don't fry your system in the process).
I have not heard the original DD disc and yes there was the defect that was mentioned above about a missing line of dialog, but Dreamworks claimed that it would be corrected in a newer pressings of the DD version. Be careful though because many retailers probably did not return their defective copies. The dts version did not have this problem.

Actually Craig, the DTS-ES Discrete 6.1 track was mastered and encoded at 24 bit/48 kHz from 24 bit PCM archival stems.

    Thanks Dan.
I stand corrected. The point is that the DD and dts versions are two completely different animals and therefore one should not be comparing these two titles head to head.
It is a matter of preference on this title.

I owned the DD version and now I own the DTS version. OH MY GOD. The DTS version is much better than the DD. Not just the Bass, but all around. The DTS version had a 24bit master. The amount of detail in the Highs and mids is much better. The surround imaging is much better. This is my own opinion from viewing on my own system.
    Enjoy
