That would seem to be about 214 mins of extras passed for the uk dvd then(in pal)and maybe more still to come,so it would work out at roughly 223mins in ntsc.I don't really see other regions being given the full documentary and the U.S. being given a cut down version.

I don't think there's any PAL speedup for most documentaries as they are usually just shot on and transferred on video. I usually get a hoot out of watching a PAL film sped up and then seeing the same scene in the making of doc. at the normal speed. My Buffy musical dvd shows this quite clearly.

Interesting. "Intro to feature theatrical" would imply that the theatrical version is on there, too. Maybe that's why it's a 3-disc-set outside R1.

DVD-18 or no, I'm definitely getting this puppy. I have the laserdisc box set and I paid something like $140 for it in 2001 (after waiting two PAINFUL years to find one for less than $200).

I can't wait :)

I am not sure they will include all the stuff classified.
My personal guess with these MASTER REELs is that they
are unedited chunks of footage that they have let the
BBFC classify. And from that, they will put together
whatever will be on the DVD(s).
As I said, just me guessing...

I don't think that is allowed. When the BBFC classify something, they also take into account the context.

For example, if the Master Reel contains a shot of Danver's head exploding, and Universal decided to re-edit the footage submitted to repeat the sequence, or slow it down or whatever, the BBFC may insist on a different classification.

While it's unlikely re-editing the footage would result in such an outcome, technically it would be illegal for Universal to release a DVD with footage not classified by the BBFC in the proper context.

I know in the specs it lists 110 mins and it doesn't say Director's Cut. I emailed CDjapan to get clarification but I can't see any reason why it isn't the Dir. Cut like every other region is getting.

I agree, no DVD-18/Universal issues for me. That was the one thing that had me fearing this release. Now I don't have to worry about it.

Because it is a preferred format for those that want less discs?

Hmmm, do I want 3 discs or one? I'll take the single disc, thanks.

I haven't scanned the entire post yet but has the inevitable "flipper" term reared its ugly head yet?

Then you'll be missing out on all the stuff on the third disc.

And personally, if faced with two DVD-9s or one DVD-18, I would go with the two disc. They will have nice disc art that allows easy identification of a disc without a need to read some tiny writing in the centre of the disc. They don't have the notorious problems and faults that a DVD-18 has. And the packaging of a two-disc DVD-9 release tends not to be much larger than that of a one-disc DVD-18 (this changes when you are talking about muti-disc sets, such as TV releases, but even there I'd rather have say a six-disc set with wider packaging than a three-disc DVD-18).
